Second-half flurry lifts Gettysburg over Mary Washington; Bullets snap skid in regular-season finale

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – After a scoreless first half, senior Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) cracked the scoreboard in the 43rd minute, leading No. 17 Gettysburg to a 3-2 win at 16th-ranked Mary Washington in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday.

Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre) made eight saves to help the Bullets (11-6) snap a three-game skid and finish the regular season on a winning note.

At the other end of the field, Robyn Lankford made seven saves for the Eagles (13-5) while Brynn Maguire had both UMW goals.

After Lowe tallied unassisted at 42:59, Maguire took a short pass from Meghan Punaro off a rebound to knot the game at 1 at the 61:30 mark.

Two minutes later, Kelley Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) started a flurry that saw three goals in three minutes to set the final margin.

In the 64th minute, Lowe played a ball off Lankford and across to the left side, where Mishler collected it and slid it into a wide open left side of the cage to give Gettysburg the lead for good.

A minute later, Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) tapped up a long hit in from Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson), redirecting it over Lankford and into the upper-right corner of the cage for a 3-1 advantage. Seidel’s eventual game-winner, her team-leading fourth of the season, marked the first time in the 12-game series that the Bullets have scored three times on the Eagles.

At the 65:17 mark, Maguire tallied her second goal of the day, collecting a ball from Laura Fassaro and putting it by Corkhill to pull within 3-2.

Mary Washington had one final chance to tie the game when the squad was awarded back-to-back penalty corners in the game’s final 30 seconds, but could not convert.

The Bullets return to action in the Centennial Conference first round at home against Washington on Wednesday. Game time is 2 p.m.
