Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Brad Baer and Brod Maybank combined for 321 of McDaniel’s program-record 470 rushing yards to lead the Green Terror past Gettysburg 31-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.

Baer carried 15 times for 166 yards and broke a 69-yard touchdown run on the game’s first play from scrimmage to help McDaniel (4-1, 2-0 CC) remain the CC’s lone undefeated team. Maybank, the conference’s leading rusher, rolled up 155 yards on 14 carries, including a 59-yard scoring dash on the Green Terror’s first play of the second half.

Jason Hartman and Meikos Parker also scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards, respectively, as McDaniel posted the seventh win in its last eight meetings with the Bullets (0-5, 0-1 CC). The Green Terror outgained Gettysburg 556-150 on the afternoon, the Bullets’ lowest offensive output of the season.

Bullet freshman Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) carried 23 times for 92 yards in his first collegiate start while quarterback-turned-wide receiver Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) returned from injury and caught a team-high eight passes for 47 yards. The quarterback tandem of Mark Szczesny (Carteret, NJ/Carteret) and Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) went 11-for-28 for 72 yards and three interceptions.

Entering the game as the conference’s top rushing offense, McDaniel nearly doubled its season average while rolling to another impressive CC victory.

The Green Terror needed exactly one play to establish the ground game. Baer took the ball on an option keeper and broke a 69-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 McDaniel just 21 seconds into the game.

A 34-yard field goal by Nate Getchell on its next possession gave the home squad a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Following an interception at midfield by Andy Lee, the Green Terror marched 51 yards on nine straight running plays to make it 17-0 with 56 seconds left in the first half. Maybank carried 10 yards to the Gettysburg 21 and Parker carried twice for 17 yards before Hartman punched in his team-leading seventh touchdown from one yard out on the next play.

After forcing the Bullets’ sixth punt of the day to open the second half, McDaniel struck for another long touchdown run when Maybank zoomed off left tackle and sprinted 59 yards to make it 24-0 with 13:10 remaining in the third quarter.

The Green Terror closed the scoring on a five-yard touchdown run by Parker with 13:29 left, set up by Colin Nelson’s 16-yard interception return to the Gettysburg 23. From there the McDaniel defense forced the last of Tom Pettit’s (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) nine punts and stopped the Bullets’ final possession on downs at the Green Terror 23 to preserve the shutout.

Ron Ringgold led McDaniel with seven tackles (six solo) while Will Epps and Brett Rough each recorded one sack. Drew Abbamonte added the Green Terror’s third interception of the day.

CC tackles leader Grant Acker (Howell, NJ/Peddie) paced Gettysburg with a game-high 14 tackles (nine solo) while Kyle Luciano (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by-the-Sea) added a career-high nine solo tackles. Jon Weller (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) also helped the Bullet defense with six tackles, an interception and his first collegiate sack.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at home against Johns Hopkins. Game time is 1 p.m.
