WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Freshman Matt Shank (Reedsville, PA/Indian Valley) continued his strong rookie campaign, winning the 141-pound weight class at the Monarch Invitational hosted by King's College on Saturday.
The Bullets finished 10th with 71 points. Ursinus won the team title with 173 points.
Shank opened his day with back-to-back falls. He started with a 3-minute, 25-second pin of Wilkes' Josh Sperling before pinning Scott Putzman of King's in 2:59. He then defeated Oneonta's John Leech 5-1 and tallied an 11-8 decision win over Ryan Bunting of Stevens Tech.
At 133, Alex Emmer (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin) wrestled back to a tie for fifth place. In the winner's bracket, he notched a 9-8 win over Bob Whelan (Centenary) and a 9-4 decision over Williamson Trade's Mike Crain before falling to eventual champion Tim Bohlman (York), 17-1.
In his lone match in the consolation brack, Emmer dropped a 17-8 major decision to Whelan.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at the Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College. Action begins at 10 a.m.
