Buzzer-beater lifts Baldwin-Wallace over Gettysburg in Days Inn championship game, 59-57

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Tori Davis stole an inbounds pass and hit the ensuing layup at the buzzer to give 16th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace a 59-57 win over Gettysburg in the championship game of the Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.

Moments earlier, Davis had turned the ball over under the basket, setting up the Bullets (1-1) for an apparent last-second shot at the win. But defending along Gettysburg’s baseline with 2.2 seconds left in regulation and the game tied at 57, Davis tipped the inbounds pass into the air, recovered the ball and scored as time expired to deliver a hard-fought Yellow Jackets victory.

With the win, Baldwin-Wallace (2-0) ended the Bullets’ three-year hold on the tournament crown, becoming the first visitor to claim the title since fellow Ohio Athletic Conference member Marietta in 2000. Gettysburg lost for the first time in eight Tip-Off games and was denied its eighth championship in the tournament’s 14-year history.

Yellow Jacket senior Tom Harrington was named the tournament’s most valuable player after averaging 11.5 points and 5.5 assists per game, and going 5-for-8 from 3-point range on the weekend. Senior Thad Davis, older brother to sophomore Tori, also earned a spot on the all-tournament team after averaging 12.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.

David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) and Ryan Page (Laurel, MD/St. John’s College [DC]) paced the Bullets with 14 and 13 points, respectively, to make the all-tournament squad. Chris Pombar (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) chipped in with eight off the Gettysburg bench.

Mary Washington defeated FDU-Florham 70-58 in the tournament’s consolation game on Saturday. UMW’s Mike Lee and FDU’s Chris Hendershot rounded out the all-tournament team.

Despite trailing for most of the first half, the Bullets pulled even at 27 in the final seconds when Page scored on a steal-and-breakaway-layup combination at the buzzer.

Kyle Jakobe’s (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) layup gave Gettysburg a short-lived lead at 37-36, but a 9-1 burst by Baldwin-Wallace made it 45-38. Keyed by seven points from Glaser and a pair of Pombar 3-pointers, the Bullets ripped off 15 of the game’s next 20 points to take a 53-50 lead with 5:33 left.

From there, the Yellow Jackets fate fell in the hands of the Davises.

Thad reeled off six straight points over the next two minutes to put Baldwin-Wallace ahead 56-53 and Tori followed with a free throw for a four-point lead with 1:37 left.

Page answered for Gettysburg, converting another steal into a breakaway dunk to cut the lead to 57-55. After Harrington missed the front end of a 1-and-1 free throw situation, Glaser scored on a driving layup to knot the game at 57 and set up the frantic final seconds.

Keith Aufmuth missed on the Yellow Jackets’ first chance to win it in regulation and Tori Davis stepped out of bounds after recovering the rebound, setting up his own heroics.

Thad Davis led Baldwin-Wallace with 15 points and 11 rebounds while Tori added 12 points. Harrington finished with 11 points and a team-high four assists.

Glaser continued to climb the Bullets’ all-time scoring list, finishing the weekend with 1,205 points and surpassing Bob Parker (1,193 from 1959-62) for seventh place on Saturday.

Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at home against York (Pa.). Game time is 7 p.m.
