COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland
Park Country School) scored a career-high 33 points and added 11 rebounds
to lead Gettysburg to a 94-85 victory over Ursinus in the Centennial Conference
(CC) women’s basketball opener for both teams on Tuesday.
Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s [DE])
poured in a career-best 28 points and added a game-high 15 rebounds to propel
the Bullets (3-1, 1-0 CC) to their biggest offensive explosion since a 98-74 win
over Ramapo on Jan. 2, 2004. Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs)
added her second collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Dana Alf shattered her previous career high
(14 against Bryn Mawr last season) with 26 points for the Bears (1-2, 0-1 CC),
including a 6-for-7 night from behind the 3-point line.
Clinging to a 41-40 halftime advantage, Gettysburg used
a 9-3 spurt over the first 3 minutes, 43 seconds of the second half to open up
a 50-44 lead.
Bengel converted three of her career-best
11 field goals during the stretch.
With
14:30 to play, Alison Walker scored to cut the lead to the 56-51
before Bengel responded with her second trey of the season to push the lead back
to eight.
Two minutes later,
Falk hit a triple from the corner and Ross made good on a mid-range jumper to
stretch the lead to 66-55.
Alf
responded with a 3-pointer of her own to start an 11-4 run over a 3-minute, 5-second
span. Alf capped the stretch with two free throws, cutting the lead to four.
A Liz Munn layup with 7:12 left cut the Ursinus
deficit to 76-73, but Bengel once again had the answer. She ripped off six straight
points for the Bullets to push the lead out to 82-73 with 4:34 to play.
Still up seven inside a minute, Falk collected her 10th
defensive rebound and combined with Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian
Valley) to connect on 3 of 4 free throws to push the Gettysburg advantage
to 10.
Ross grabbed her season-best
15th rebound off a Stephanie Cavalier miss and connected on both
of her ensuing charity tosses to make it a 94-82 game with eight seconds showing.
Molly Guntli connected on her lone 3-point
attempt of the night with three ticks left to set the final margin.
In a first half riddled with eight ties and nine lead changes,
both teams had opportunities to seize control.
Ross
connected on two layups to stake the Bullets to a 4-2 advantage before Sarah
Hennessey converted two layups of her own for a 6-4 Bear lead.
Alf stretched the lead to three on her first trey of the
game, but Falk hit a 3-pointer and Ross and Katie Eiden (Silver Spring,
MD/Georgetown Visitation) connected on consecutive layups for a 13-9 advantage.
Down six midway through the opening stanza, Walker and
Hennessey combined for the next eight Ursinus points to take a one-point lead
with 7:56 remaining until intermission.
Jamie
Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) once again gave Gettysburg a
31-29 advantage with four minutes to play in the first en route to the 41-40 halftime
lead.
Hennessey, Guntli and
Mary Kate Daley all finished with 14 points for the Bears. Daley
completed a double-double with 11 rebounds, all defensive. Guntli also did the
work on the glass, grabbing nine boards but the Bullets finished the game with
a 51-35 rebounding edge.
Falk
added a season-high five assists in the victory, leading head coach Mike Kirkpatrick to his 199th victory at Gettysburg. Kirkpatrick stands one
win away from becoming the first coach in program history with 200 career coaching
victories.
Gettysburg returns
to action against No. 17 Johns Hopkins at home on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
