Career nights lead Gettysburg to 94-85 win at Ursinus

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) scored a career-high 33 points and added 11 rebounds to lead Gettysburg to a 94-85 victory over Ursinus in the Centennial Conference (CC) women’s basketball opener for both teams on Tuesday.

Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s [DE]) poured in a career-best 28 points and added a game-high 15 rebounds to propel the Bullets (3-1, 1-0 CC) to their biggest offensive explosion since a 98-74 win over Ramapo on Jan. 2, 2004. Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) added her second collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Dana Alf shattered her previous career high (14 against Bryn Mawr last season) with 26 points for the Bears (1-2, 0-1 CC), including a 6-for-7 night from behind the 3-point line.

Clinging to a 41-40 halftime advantage, Gettysburg used a 9-3 spurt over the first 3 minutes, 43 seconds of the second half to open up a 50-44 lead.
Bengel converted three of her career-best 11 field goals during the stretch.

With 14:30 to play, Alison Walker scored to cut the lead to the 56-51 before Bengel responded with her second trey of the season to push the lead back to eight.

Two minutes later, Falk hit a triple from the corner and Ross made good on a mid-range jumper to stretch the lead to 66-55.

Alf responded with a 3-pointer of her own to start an 11-4 run over a 3-minute, 5-second span. Alf capped the stretch with two free throws, cutting the lead to four.

A Liz Munn layup with 7:12 left cut the Ursinus deficit to 76-73, but Bengel once again had the answer. She ripped off six straight points for the Bullets to push the lead out to 82-73 with 4:34 to play.

Still up seven inside a minute, Falk collected her 10th defensive rebound and combined with Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) to connect on 3 of 4 free throws to push the Gettysburg advantage to 10.

Ross grabbed her season-best 15th rebound off a Stephanie Cavalier miss and connected on both of her ensuing charity tosses to make it a 94-82 game with eight seconds showing.

Molly Guntli connected on her lone 3-point attempt of the night with three ticks left to set the final margin.

In a first half riddled with eight ties and nine lead changes, both teams had opportunities to seize control.

Ross connected on two layups to stake the Bullets to a 4-2 advantage before Sarah Hennessey converted two layups of her own for a 6-4 Bear lead.

Alf stretched the lead to three on her first trey of the game, but Falk hit a 3-pointer and Ross and Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) connected on consecutive layups for a 13-9 advantage.

Down six midway through the opening stanza, Walker and Hennessey combined for the next eight Ursinus points to take a one-point lead with 7:56 remaining until intermission.

Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) once again gave Gettysburg a 31-29 advantage with four minutes to play in the first en route to the 41-40 halftime lead.

Hennessey, Guntli and Mary Kate Daley all finished with 14 points for the Bears. Daley completed a double-double with 11 rebounds, all defensive. Guntli also did the work on the glass, grabbing nine boards but the Bullets finished the game with a 51-35 rebounding edge.

Falk added a season-high five assists in the victory, leading head coach Mike Kirkpatrick to his 199th victory at Gettysburg. Kirkpatrick stands one win away from becoming the first coach in program history with 200 career coaching victories.

Gettysburg returns to action against No. 17 Johns Hopkins at home on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
