GRANTHAM, Pa. – Zach Wiernicki
scored a game-high 19 points to lead Messiah past Gettysburg 67-63 in non-conference
men’s basketball action on Monday. Limited
to 23 minutes due to foul trouble, Wiernicki nonetheless hit 8 of 10 shots from
the floor to help the Falcons (4-0) remain undefeated in 2004-05 and post their
third straight win over the Bullets (1-3). Steve King came within
one point of a double-double, adding nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds in
the winning effort.
Sophomore
Mike Spadafora (Richboro, PA/Archbishop Wood), a preseason transfer
from Duquesne, led three Gettysburg players in double figures with a career-high
17 points. Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) added 10
points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Propelled
by a 50-percent shooting effort from the floor, including 5-of-8 from 3-point
range, the Bullets took a slim 31-30 lead into halftime before Messiah rallied.
The Falcons hit 16 of 21 free throws in the second half while holding Gettysburg
to 7-of-25 shooting to post the victory.
Dave
Carter also hit double figures with 12 points for Messiah.
Gettysburg’s Ryan Page (Laurel, MD/St. John’s College
[DC]) chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds in his first start of
the year. The Bullets, who hit just 3 of 14 3-pointers in the second half, were
without leading scorer and rebounder David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern
Prep).
Gettysburg returns
to action on Saturday in its Centennial Conference opener at McDaniel. Game time
is 3 p.m.
