Gettysburg opens CC playoffs with 2-1 victory over Washington; Bullets to face Ursinus in semis on Saturday

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) tapped home the game-winning goal to give No. 16 Gettysburg a 2-1 win over Washington in the first round of the 2004 Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey tournament on Wednesday.

With the victory, the Bullets (12-6) advance to the semifinals to take on top-seeded Ursinus, ranked fourth in the latest STX/NFHCA coaches’ poll, on Saturday.

Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) got fourth-seeded Gettysburg on the board early in the contest.

Meggie Kratz scored the lone goal for the Shorewomen (9-9), who fell to 0-4 all-time in the CC playoffs. Gettysburg also defeated Washington in the 2001 tournament – the last conference title for the Bullets.

Gettysburg goalkeeper Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) and Washington goalie Erin O’Brien made six saves apiece.

After carrying play for the final 10 minutes of the first half and first 15 of the second, the Bullets converted on their sixth penalty corner of the game.

Downey sent the ball high to Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson), who sent it low where Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) collected it. Seidel tapped a short pass to Downey, who slipped it behind O’Brien at 50:20 for her third game-winning goal of the season.

At the 5:10 mark, Latta sent a ball right to Lowe, who carried the ball to the cage and tapped it home for a 1-0 Gettysburg advantage.

In the 19th minute, Kratz rebounded a Laura Scimeca shot and save to knot the game at 1.

After an evenly played first half that saw each team take six shots and have two penalty corners, the Bullets took control in the second half, outshooting the visitors 10-1 and holding an 8-2 advantage in penalty corners in the second stanza.

In the regular-season meeting with the Bears, Ursinus scored two second-half goals to take a 3-1 victory in Gettysburg on Oct. 23.

Franklin & Marshall and Dickinson meet in the CC’s other semifinal. The winners of the two semifinals will meet on Sunday at the site of the highest remaining seed.

The Bullets play Ursinus in the day’s first semifinal at 11 a.m.
