GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Katie Myers (Randallstown, MD/WSTES) scored her first-ever hat trick to help Gettysburg defeat Johns Hopkins 4-3 in the Centennial Conference (CC) championship game in women's soccer action on Sunday.
The Bullets (14-4-2) claimed their fifth conference title, their first since 1999, after advancing to the tournament final for the third straight season. With the win, Gettysburg earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament with the field to be announced Sunday night.
The Blue Jays (15-4-1) fell to Gettysburg for the second straight year in the conference tournament. In 2003, the two teams tied 1-1 in the semifinals, but the Bullets advance on penalty kicks, 6-5.
Gettysburg dominated the first half, firing eight shots and holding the Johns Hopkins offense shotless.
In the 10th minute, Jenny Line (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) nabbed the ball at midfield and brought it to the box, setting Myers up to put the Bullets on the board 1-0, a lead they would not surrender.
Myers put Gettysburg up 2-0 after Steph Heath (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) sent the ball from midfield to Line who was on goal with Myers. Line crossed the ball to Myers on the left who drilled the ball past JHU's goalkeeper Jen Goebel in the 54th minute.
Christina DiTucci (E. Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy), who netted both goals in Gettysburg's semifinal win over Ursinus, put the Bullets up by three at 57:17 after drilling a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the top right corner of the net.
Lindsey Kimura got her foot on a direct kick from Jessica McKenzie just over a minute later to give the Blue Jays their first goal of the day.
Myers connected with Steph Smith (Cooperstown, NY/Cooperstown) for her third goal of the contest, completing her first-ever collegiate hat trick and putting the Bullets up 4-1 with just over 15 minutes remaining.
The Blue Jays took advantage of the remaining time, bringing the score within a one-goal margin.
Katherine Taft sent a cross to Laurie Baumann in front of the net who sent the ball past Gettysburg netminder Allie Loeb (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery), bringing Johns Hopkins within two.
Fewer than four minutes later, McKenzie connected on her own out of a direct kick, but the Blue Jays' late surge ended short with the final score being 4-3.
Gettysburg outshot Johns Hopkins 14-8, and had a 2-1 corner kick advantage.
Loeb finished with four saves in the winning effort, while Goebel made five stops.
