First-half run powers McDaniel to 73-64 win over Gettysburg

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Kristy Costa led a balanced McDaniel attack with 12 points to lead the Green Terror to a 73-64 victory over visiting Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s basketball action on Saturday.

Amy Watson and Sara Franz added 11 points apiece while Watson chipped in a team-best nine rebounds for McDaniel (4-1, 3-0 CC), who defeated the Bullets (3-3, 1-2 CC) for the 10th straight time in Westminster.

Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country Day School) and Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s) combined for 40 of Gettysburg’s 64 points. Bengel scored a game-high 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Ross added 18 points and 15 rebounds for her fourth double-double in the first six games.

Jacqueline Pundt, Franz and Costa each converted a layup in the game’s opening 1 minute, 45 seconds to stake the Green Terror to a 6-0 advantage, never relinquishing the lead after that.

A pair of free throws from Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) and a Ross layup cut the lead to 6-4, but Franz and Costa combined to push the lead back to 10-4 at the 16:09 mark.

A Bengel layup and 3-pointer from Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) cut the advantage to 10-9.

Franz had the answer, though, hitting a trey at the other end to spark a 13-4 burst for the Green Terror’s first 10-point lead with 11:19 remaining in the first half.

Allison Biggs had her only four points of the game during the four-minute stretch.

A Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) putback at the 4:41 mark cut the Bullet deficit to 32-25.

A minute, 17 seconds later, Heather Thompson hit both charity tosses to start a 17-0 run to give McDaniel its largest lead at 49-25 with 17:48 to play in the second half.

A fifth-chance layup and three-point play from Watson on consecutive possessions fueled the spark that gave the Green Terror a 45-25 lead at the intermission.

Kelly Cramp scored the first four points of the second stanza before Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) finally snapped a 7-minute, 31-second scoring drought with a layup at the 17:16 mark.

With her team still down 23 on two Costa free throws with 9:49 remaining, Falk hit both of her charity tosses to start a 20-6 run over the next 6 minutes, 21 seconds to close to within seven.

Marshall hit the only other Bullet triple before Bengel notched the next eight Gettysburg points to pull within 64-49 with 5:40 to play.

After Megan Hartman (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) converted 1 of 2 free throws, Ross hit a layup and went 4-for-4 from the stripe before Bengel capped the run with a layup.

The Bullets held McDaniel without a field goal for the game’s final 7:03, but the Green Terror converted 9 of 18 free throws to preserve the victory.

Cramp added 10 points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists for the Green Terror. Costa added six rebounds and five steals in the victory, denying Gettysburg head coach Mike Kirkpatrick his second attempt at coaching victory No. 200.

Bengel added seven rebounds and four steals for the Bullets while Falk had seven points and five rebounds.

Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at home against Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 7 p.m.
