Md. Kristy Costa led
a balanced McDaniel attack with 12 points to lead the Green Terror to a 73-64
victory over visiting Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) womens basketball
action on Saturday.Amy
Watson and Sara Franz
added 11 points apiece while Watson chipped in a team-best nine rebounds for McDaniel
(4-1, 3-0 CC), who defeated the Bullets (3-3, 1-2 CC) for the 10th
straight time in Westminster.
Jen
Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland
Park Country
Day School) and Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown,
MD/St. Andrews) combined for 40
of Gettysburgs 64 points.
Bengel scored a game-high 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting and
went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Ross added 18 points and 15 rebounds
for her fourth double-double in the first six games.
Jacqueline
Pundt, Franz and Costa each converted a layup in the games opening 1 minute, 45 seconds to stake
the Green Terror to a 6-0 advantage, never relinquishing the lead after that.
A
pair of free throws from Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) and a Ross
layup cut the lead to 6-4, but Franz and Costa combined to
push the lead back to 10-4 at the 16:09 mark.
A
Bengel layup and 3-pointer
from Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling
Springs) cut the advantage to 10-9.
Franz
had the answer, though, hitting a trey at the other end to spark a 13-4 burst
for the Green Terrors first 10-point lead with 11:19 remaining in the first
half.
Allison
Biggs had her only four points of the game during the four-minute stretch.
A
Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem,
PA/Liberty) putback at the 4:41 mark cut the Bullet deficit to 32-25.
A
minute, 17 seconds later, Heather Thompson hit both charity tosses to start a 17-0 run
to give McDaniel its largest lead at 49-25 with 17:48 to play in the second half.
A
fifth-chance layup and three-point play from Watson
on consecutive possessions fueled the spark that gave the Green Terror a 45-25
lead at the intermission.
Kelly
Cramp scored the first four points of the second stanza before Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) finally
snapped a 7-minute, 31-second scoring drought with a layup at the 17:16 mark.
With
her team still down 23 on two Costa free throws with 9:49 remaining, Falk hit
both of her charity tosses to start a 20-6 run over the next 6 minutes, 21 seconds
to close to within seven.
Marshall
hit the only other Bullet triple before Bengel notched
the next eight Gettysburg points to pull
within 64-49 with 5:40 to play.
After
Megan Hartman (Lewistown,
PA/Indian Valley)
converted 1 of 2 free throws, Ross hit a layup and went
4-for-4 from the stripe before Bengel capped the run
with a layup.
The
Bullets held McDaniel without a field goal for the games final 7:03, but
the Green Terror converted 9 of 18 free throws to preserve the victory.
Cramp
added 10 points, four rebounds, four steals and four assists for the Green Terror.
Costa added six rebounds and five steals in the victory, denying Gettysburg
head coach Mike Kirkpatrick
his second attempt at coaching victory No. 200.
Bengel
added seven rebounds and four steals for the Bullets while Falk had seven points
and five rebounds.
Gettysburg
returns to action on Tuesday at home against Franklin & Marshall. Game time
is 7 p.m.
