Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s [DE]) scored her fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Gettysburg women’s basketball team to a 71-58 win over Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Tuesday.

The win, which marked head coach Mike Kirkpatrick’s 200th coaching victory, was the Bullets’ (4-3, 2-2 CC) second conference win this season and avenges a 74-69 loss to the Diplomats (1-6, 1-2 CC) a year ago.

Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) netted a game-high 21 points, including 9-for-10 from the free-throw line, while Katie Eiden (Silver Springs, MD/Georgetown Visitation) registered 11 points for the Bullets.

Maura Lentz led the Franklin & Marshall with 19 points, including four treys, and seven rebounds.

Gettysburg dominated play from the beginning when Bengel dropped a jumper in the first seconds of the game then Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) drilled a three-pointer for a 5-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

With her team down early, Lentz scored a jumper and a 3-pointer to bring F&M within three. Christy Strunk converted a three-point play to knot the game at 11 and a good layup by Emily Weaver gave the Diplomats their first lead of the day with 13:10 to go in the half.

The teams rallied back and forth until Bengel made a layup with 10:30 remaining in the first half and put the Bullets up for good. Powered by Bengel’s 10 points, Gettysburg closed the half up 30-20.

Strunk scored her second triple to open up the second half, but the Bullets to over with Ross and Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) combining for the eight of the next 11 points, claiming a 12-point advantage with 15:41 left to play.

Gettysburg opened up its biggest lead of the night 55-37 with just over seven minutes remaining after Bengel dropped two from the charity stripe.

Fueled by Lentz, the Diplomats edged back bringing the game within seven with a minute left to play, but six made free throws for Ross and two by Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) kept Gettysburg ahead at the conclusion of the game.

Reilly also added eight points and seven boards while Falk chipped in eight.

F&M’s Dana Johns tallied 10 points while Lauren Dodrill grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Messiah. Game time is 3 p.m.
