Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Dennis Stanton converted the go-ahead free throw with 1:37 remaining for the last of his game-high 38 points, lifting Ursinus over Gettysburg 75-74 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Wednesday.

Stanton, who gave the Bears (13-8, 9-5 CC) a 74-72 lead moments earlier on the last of his eight 3-pointers, knocked down 13 of 26 shots on the night to help Ursinus break a tie for third place with the Bullets (12-9, 8-6 CC) in the CC standings. Mike McGarvey drilled four 3-pointers en route to 16 points and handed out seven assists, breaking the program single-season assist record in the process.

David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) led Gettysburg with 25 points while Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) poured in all of his career-high 15 points in the second half. Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort.

On a night when the lead changed hands 19 times, the backcourt combination of Stanton and McGarvey provided the final heroics to give the Bears a leg-up in the playoff race.

With Ursinus trailing 68-62 and 4:17 to play, McGarvey drained a 3-pointer off the inbounds pass to halt a 23-9 Bullet run and start the comeback. Ted Piotrowicz hit 1 of 2 free throws and Stanton scored on a driving layup to pull the Bears within 70-68.

Stanton's 3-point play put Ursinus back on top at 71-70 with 2:33 left, but Glaser converted both ends of a 1-and-1 for Gettysburg's final lead of the night. On the Bears' next trip, Stanton squared up from the top of the key and nailed another trey for a 74-72 Bear advantage with 2:07 remaining.

Oloruntoba quickly knotted the game at 74 with a driving layup, but Stanton was fouled going to the basket and hit the second of two free throws to make it 75-74.

After empty trips by both teams, Stanton was blocked on a drive with 18 seconds left, but Whelan's game-winning attempt bounced away as time expired.

Following a back-and-forth first half, Ursinus appeared to take control with an 11-2 run that made it 53-45 with 13:44 left. The Bullets, however, responded with a 10-0 burst to take a 55-53 lead, then extended their advantage to 65-58 on Whelan's career-high third 3-pointer of the night.

With Stanton and Glaser trading baskets throughout the half, Gettysburg and Ursinus exchanged the lead 11 times and battled to a 40-all halftime deadlock.

An early McGarvey 3-pointer put the Bears on top 5-4. Ursinus held its edge until Glaser drilled a 3-pointer and Oloruntoba finished a breakaway dunk to make it 22-21 Bullets with 7:40 left in the half.

Stanton drilled the second of his five first-half 3-pointers to put the Bears back ahead 24-22, but Glaser hit two free throws and finished a baseline drive to make it 26-24 Gettysburg. McGarvey gave Ursinus a 29-28 lead with a 3-pointer only to have Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) answer with two of his seven first-half points.

A Brady 3-pointer made it 35-34 Bullets with 2:21 left in the half. Stanton sandwiched two more treys around Kyle McGlensey's (West Chester, PA/East) 3-point play for a 40-38 lead. Oloruntoba hit two free throws with five ticks left to send the teams into the locker room knotted at 40.

Matt Fabian added 10 points for the Bears, who won for the second time in their last eight meetings with Gettysburg.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against Washington (Md.). Game time is 2 p.m.
