GETTYSBURG, Pa. David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) had 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second
half to help Gettysburg stretch a three-point halftime
advantage into a 77-71 Centennial Conference (CC) mens
basketball victory over visiting Washington (Md.) on Saturday.
Matt
Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) backed up Wednesdays
career-high 15 points with a new career best of 19, once
again all coming in the second half. Dami
Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) added
a collegiate-best 12 rebounds for the Bullets (13-9, 9-6
CC).
Dustin
Abbate paced the Shoremen (8-14,
5-10 CC) with 19 points while David Horvath
and Jonathan Webb added 18 and 11, respectively.
Gettysburg
opened up a 60-48 lead with 8:21 to play for its largest
lead but was held to just 1 of 7 shooting the rest of the
way, including no field goals for the last 4:44 of the contest.
The Bullets, however, did convert 15 of their final 17 free-throw
attempts over that span to hold on for the win and a tie
for fourth place in the CC standings.
Washington used a 6-0 spurt over a period
of 1:25 to take its first lead of the game at 35-34 on a Buck
Howanski layup
at the 15:24 mark of the second half. Following a Jeff McMahon
layup at 13:16 that once again gave the Shoreman the one-point edge at 40-39, Gettysburg used a Glaser layup and back-to-back 3-pointers from Whelan to regain a
47-41 advantage.
McMahon
hit both ends of a 1-and-1 to cut the lead to 47-43, but
the Bullets once again countered with seven of the next
nine points, capped by the final of Whelans career-high
four treys.
Glaser
finished a 12-for-12 day from the charity stripe by hitting
eight of his teams final 15 free throws to counter
a fierce attempt at a comeback from Washington down the stretch. The Shoremen went 5-for-8 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the
line in the games final 3:18, but could not overcome the
deficit. Horvath connected on all four of his free-throw
attempts and his only 3-pointer of the game for Washington during that span.
Gettysburg started the game with a 9-0
run in the opening 5:51 behind seven points from Glaser.
Eight straight points from Abbate
in a 2-minute, 13-second span pulled Washington to within 11-8 with 10:28 remaining in the first stanza.
A
Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore,
MD/McDonogh) 3-pointer
and Glaser layup pushed the Bullet
advantage to 19-13, but the third of Abbates
game-high five treys and 1 of 2 free throws from Travis
Moore cut the lead to 19-17.
Horvath
connected on his only points of the first half with a jumper
with 48 seconds showing to trim the halftime margin to 27-24.
Glaser
added seven rebounds and five assists in the victory while
Jakobe finished with nine points,
all on 3-pointers.
By
virtue of a 69-49 Haverford win over Johns Hopkins, Gettysburg sits one game out of second
place in the standings entering Wednesdays contest
with the Blue Jays. The final Bullet home game tips off
at 8 p.m.
