Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa.David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) had 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second half to help Gettysburg stretch a three-point halftime advantage into a 77-71 Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball victory over visiting Washington (Md.) on Saturday.

Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) backed up Wednesday’s career-high 15 points with a new career best of 19, once again all coming in the second half. Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) added a collegiate-best 12 rebounds for the Bullets (13-9, 9-6 CC).

Dustin Abbate paced the Shoremen (8-14, 5-10 CC) with 19 points while David Horvath and Jonathan Webb added 18 and 11, respectively.

Gettysburg opened up a 60-48 lead with 8:21 to play for its largest lead but was held to just 1 of 7 shooting the rest of the way, including no field goals for the last 4:44 of the contest. The Bullets, however, did convert 15 of their final 17 free-throw attempts over that span to hold on for the win and a tie for fourth place in the CC standings.

Washington used a 6-0 spurt over a period of 1:25 to take its first lead of the game at 35-34 on a Buck Howanski layup at the 15:24 mark of the second half. Following a Jeff McMahon layup at 13:16 that once again gave the Shoreman the one-point edge at 40-39, Gettysburg used a Glaser layup and back-to-back 3-pointers from Whelan to regain a 47-41 advantage.

McMahon hit both ends of a 1-and-1 to cut the lead to 47-43, but the Bullets once again countered with seven of the next nine points, capped by the final of Whelan’s career-high four treys.

Glaser finished a 12-for-12 day from the charity stripe by hitting eight of his team’s final 15 free throws to counter a fierce attempt at a comeback from Washington down the stretch. The Shoremen went 5-for-8 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the line in the game’s final 3:18, but could not overcome the deficit. Horvath connected on all four of his free-throw attempts and his only 3-pointer of the game for Washington during that span.

Gettysburg started the game with a 9-0 run in the opening 5:51 behind seven points from Glaser. Eight straight points from Abbate in a 2-minute, 13-second span pulled Washington to within 11-8 with 10:28 remaining in the first stanza.

A Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) 3-pointer and Glaser layup pushed the Bullet advantage to 19-13, but the third of Abbate’s game-high five treys and 1 of 2 free throws from Travis Moore cut the lead to 19-17.

Horvath connected on his only points of the first half with a jumper with 48 seconds showing to trim the halftime margin to 27-24.

Glaser added seven rebounds and five assists in the victory while Jakobe finished with nine points, all on 3-pointers.

By virtue of a 69-49 Haverford win over Johns Hopkins, Gettysburg sits one game out of second place in the standings entering Wednesday’s contest with the Blue Jays. The final Bullet home game tips off at 8 p.m.
