Gettysburg breaks fourth-place tie with 77-75 win over Haverford; Bullets set to face Franklin & Marshall in CC semifinals on Saturday

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) scored 23 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead Gettysburg over Haverford 77-75 in the Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball tie-breaker game on Thursday.

Glaser, named to the All-CC first team earlier in the week, went 7-for-8 from both the field and the line in the second half to help the Bullets (15-11) qualify for this weekend’s CC playoffs. Gettysburg will face top seed and host Franklin & Marshall in the conference semifinals on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) drained all three of his 3-point attempts en route to 15 points, putting Gettysburg ahead to stay on a three with 6:49 remaining. Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) added 13 for the Bullets, who shot a season-high 63 percent from the floor for the game, including a 12-for-16 (75 percent) showing in the second half.

Jeremy Bass, a second-team All-CC choice, led four players in double figures with 24 points for Haverford (12-13), which fell to Gettysburg for the third time this season. Johnny Elefterakis nailed 5 of 8 3-pointers to finish with 15 points while Jason Polykoff scored 13 and dished out a team-best four assists off the Fords’ bench.

Playing in a championship-game atmosphere, the Bullets used hot shooting and 32 trips to the free-throw line to rally and reach the CC postseason.

Down 60-56 with 8:20 following a scoop layup by Bass, Gettysburg scored 10 straight points to take the lead for good. Glaser started the run with a pair of free throws and Whelan hit the second of two charity tosses to make it 60-59.

Following a missed Fords layup, Whelan took a hand-off from Glaser and nailed his third 3-pointer of the night to put the Bullets on top 62-60. Seconds later, Glaser stole the ball and threw down a breakaway dunk to make it 64-60. The junior co-captain capped the burst with a cutting layup to put the hosts ahead 66-60 at the 5:54 mark.

Patrick Stewart cut the Haverford deficit in half with a 3-pointer, but Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) hit a layup to push the advantage to 70-65 with 4:39 left. Mark Gabriel cut the lead to 74-72 with 55.5 seconds remaining, but the Fords would get no closer.

Elefterakis stole the ball from Whelan on Gettysburg’s next trip, but missed the potential game-tying runner at the other end. After Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) corralled the rebound and hit the first of two free throws, Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) tapped Jakobe’s miss on the second attempt into the hands of Brady, who was immediately fouled with 10 ticks left.

Brady hit 1 of 2 to make it a two-possession game at 76-72. Elefterakis drained his final 3-pointer of the night to pull Haverford within 76-75 with 3.8 seconds left, but Whelan converted 1 of 2 foul shots and the Fords’ last-second heave missed the mark to give the Bullets a nail-biting victory.

Behind three quick 3-pointers from Elefterakis, Haverford built a 15-6 lead in the game’s first five minutes and stayed on top into the opening minutes of the second half. Eight straight points from Glaser and a Brady 3-pointer turned a 38-34 Fords lead into a 45-41 Gettysburg advantage with 16:20 left.

Two Glaser free throws pushed the lead to 50-45, but Bass and Polykoff keyed an 11-4 run that made it 56-54 Haverford with 10:26 remaining.

Matt Stein was the fourth Haverford player in double figures with 10 points. The Fords shot 8-for-17 (47 percent) from 3-point range on the night and 56 percent from the floor.

With his 27-point outing, Glaser jumped from 14th to 11th on the program’s all-time scoring list, closing the night with 1,138 career points. Brady’s 13-point showing was his fourth consecutive double-digit scoring performance.

With the win, Gettysburg improved to 17-1 all-time against Haverford, including wins in the last seven meetings between the teams. The Bullets are appearing in the CC playoffs for the fourth time and are seeking their third conference championship.
