Glaser ties career scoring high, tallies 1,000th career point in 70-50 Gettysburg win over Muhlenberg

Box Score

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Junior David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) tied a career high with 31 points and became the 20th player in Gettysburg history to reach the 1,000-career point mark in the Bullets’ 70-50 Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball victory over Muhlenberg on Saturday.

Glaser went 10-for-14 from the floor and converted all eight free throws, the last two coming with 4:40 remaining to put the Gettysburg captain squarely at the 1,000-point plateau. Glaser also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out five assists to help the Bullets (12-8, 8-5 CC) post a regular-season victory at Memorial Hall for the first time since 1987, a stretch of 11 consecutive losses.

Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) added 11 points in the win, helping Gettysburg keep pace with Johns Hopkins, Ursinus and Swarthmore in the CC’s burgeoning playoff battle. The Bullets remained tied with the defending champion Bears for third place, one game behind the Blue Jays and one ahead of the Garnet with five games remaining.

Jeff Stewart led Muhlenberg (6-14, 4-9 CC) with 14 points and six rebounds. Tom Scott added nine points and five boards for the Mules, who dropped their fifth consecutive game and fourth straight meeting with Gettysburg.

Despite Glaser’s big finish, it was Oloruntoba and Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) who got the Bullets’ offense started.

Oloruntoba hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Gettysburg’s first six points and Jakobe connected twice from behind the arc to stake the visitors to a 12-5 lead. Scott’s driving layup made it 12-7, but Glaser scored on two free throws and a backdoor layup ahead of a Jakobe jumper that pushed the Bullet advantage to 18-7.

Jimmy O’Brien’s put-back cut the Mule deficit to 20-13, but it was as close as the hosts would get the rest of the afternoon.

Erik Fromm’s (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) hook shot started a 9-0 Gettysburg run that made it 29-13 with 6:40 left in the first half. Glaser threw down a fast-break dunk during the stretch, then capped the burst with the first of three 3-pointers.

Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) hit two free throws to give the Bullets their largest lead of the half at 33-15 with 4:24 left. A Scott layup pulled Muhlenberg within 35-21 at halftime.

Stewart opened the half with a short jumper to cut the Gettysburg lead to 12, but Glaser scored nine points on a 14-4 run that stretched his squad’s lead to 49-27 with 14:49 remaining. Nine points from 1,000, Glaser hit two free throws at 12:47, drilled a 3-pointer with 9:00 left, then converted a transition layup on the Bullets’ next trip to get within two of the mark.

A Muhlenberg foul sent Glaser to the line with 4:40 remaining and the Gettysburg co-captain calmly swished both tosses to reach the record book.

Jakobe finished with eight points on the day while Fromm chipped in with six points, four steals and a team-high nine rebounds.

Glaser became the fourth Bullet to reach 1,000 career points in the past five seasons, but the first to do it in three seasons since Bill Davidson tallied 1,035 from 1997-2000.

Prior to Saturday, Gettysburg’s last regular-season victory in Allentown was an 83-61 decision on Feb. 14, 1987. The Bullets had, however, captured CC postseason victories at Memorial Hall in 2001 and 2002.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at Ursinus. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
