CORTLAND, N.Y. – Evan Gallant (Lutherville,
MD/Loyola Blakefield) took a cross-field pass from
Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and
slipped it into the back of the net just 15 seconds into overtime,
lifting eighth-ranked Gettysburg to a 12-11 victory over No.
3 SUNY Cortland in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on
Sunday.
Gallant’s goal, his second of the game,
helped the Bullets (2-0) withstand a furious Red Dragon rally
that saw the hosts erase an 8-5 deficit with six fourth-quarter
goals, including the game-tying tally by Mike Felice
with 14.8 seconds left in regulation.
Van Nostrand posted a game-high seven points
on three goals and four assists for Gettysburg, which improved
to 5-0 all-time against Cortland. Chase Stewart (Downingtown,
PA/Downingtown) added two goals and one assist.
Felice led the Red Dragons (1-1) with
three goals and an assist. Adam Hughes and Kyle
Lambert added three points each.
After Felice tied the game in the waning
moments of the fourth quarter, the Bullets cashed in a late
Red Dragon penalty to pull out the win.
Gettysburg won possession after Felice’s
goal and Cortland was whistled for an illegal check to the
head with 3.1 seconds left. The Bullets held possession until
the final buzzer and subsequently opened the extra session
with the ball.
Van Nostrand drifted just outside the crease
on the right side and sent a high cross-field pass to Gallant,
who rocketed the winning shot behind Red Dragon keeper Ben
Gaebel.
After a slow start by both teams, Drew
Hyatt got the hosts on the board with 4:52 remaining
in the opening stanza for a 1-0 lead.
Seven Gettysburg goals in the second
quarter gave the Bullets a 7-4 edge at the intermission.
John O’Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland
School) scored his lone goal of the game wide open
from the right side just 1 minute, 13 seconds into the second
frame to tie the game at 1-all.
Blake Gale gave Cortland
its final lead of the game, scoring unassisted from the top
of the arc.
Matt Smith (Lansdale, PA/Germantown
Academy) netted his first collegiate goal and the
first of five straight Gettysburg markers that gave the visitors
a 6-2 edge. Van Nostrand had three of his four assists and
his first goal in that stretch.
Hughes took a pass from Hyatt and scored
on a bounce shot to pull the Red Dragons within 6-3 with 5:33
remaining before the intermission. Seventeen seconds later
Felice cut the Bullet lead to two.
Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New
Canaan) set the halftime margin on a wide-open goal
with 4:20 showing in the second.
After a goal each in the third, Cortland
scored three of the first four goals in the fourth quarter
to pull within one at 9-8. In that stretch, Lambert converted
two man-up opportunities.
Van Nostrand stretched the lead back
to two, taking a pass low from Brian Pryor (Dallas,
TX/St. Mark’s) and finding the lower right corner
of the cage with 5:57 to play.
With 5:16 showing, Felice tallied unassisted
before Andrew Roth took a pass from Felice to
convert the Red Dragons’ final man-advantage goal at the 4:24
mark.
Within a minute, Jay Mayes (Pikesville,
MD/McDonogh) slashed through the defense and scored
off a pass from Stewart to give the Bullets an 11-10 lead
with 3:25 to go.
Felice forced the extra period with his
goal in the final seconds, before Gallant’s heroics gave Gettysburg
the victory.
Eight different Bullets found the cage
in Sunday’s win, and nine tallied at least one point. Freshman
net-minder Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola)
improved his collegiate mark to 2-0, making 14 saves in the
contest.
Gaebel made 11 stops between the pipes
for Cortland.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday
at home against Wooster. Game time is 3 p.m.
