MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored to lead Gettysburg past Skidmore 8-3 in non-conference softball action on Monday.
Pilarcik scored the game-tying run in the second inning and recorded an RBI double in the seventh to help the Bullets (1-2) capture their first win of the season. Gettysburg dropped its first game of the day to Utica, 1-0.
Freshman Meghan Howlett (Millsboro, DE/Milford) picked up her first collegiate victory, limiting the Thoroughbreds to three runs on five hits while going the distance.
Lauren Amico went 1-for-3 on the day and scored all three runs for Skidmore while Caitlin Kennedy tallied two RBIs.
The Bullets scored five runs in the seventh inning to pull away from Skidmore and seal the victory.
Down 1-0 after the first, Pilarcik rounded the bases on Sara Gutermuth's (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) single to centerfield, making it 1-1. In the third, Gettysburg took the lead on Gutermuth's first double of the season, which scored Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon). Gutermuth then reached home, thanks to a Skidmore error on the throw to the plate for a 3-1 edge.
Amico took advantage of a Bullet error and scored her second run of the game in the bottom of the third to pull within one at 3-2.
Both teams battled through three scoreless innings, until Gettysburg exploded with five runs on six hits in the top of the seventh. Pilarcik, Megan Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) and Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) each hit a double while Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) topped it off with her first triple of the season.
In game one, Heidi Savage hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to knock in Christina Mylott for the game-winning run as Utica defeated Gettysburg, 1-0.
Stef Festa tossed a shutout for the Thoroughbreds, giving up only five hits in seven innings of work.
Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) and Pilarcik went 1-for-2 in the loss.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Mylott scored on Savage's single and collected the only run they would need for the win.
The Bullets had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the sixth inning, but couldn't put any runs on the board.
Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/ Cinnaminson) was handed her second loss of the season, despite only giving up one run on three hits.
Gettysburg returns to action on Monday, facing Rutgers-Newark at 9:30 a.m. and SUNY Oswego at 11:30 a.m.
