COCOA, Fla. – Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) had four hits in five at bats over two games as Gettysburg snapped a five-game winless streak with 14-1 and 9-1 victories over Finlandia at the Cocoa Expo in Cocoa Beach, Fla., on Monday.

Smith was 2-for-2 in the opener with two RBIs and two runs scored, and went 2-for-3 in the nightcap with a run scored and run batted in. As a team, the Bullets (4-4-1) pounded out 15 hits in game one against a Lion squad that was playing in its first-ever intercollegiate baseball contest.

Matt Davis broke up Brian Spicer's (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) attempt at a no-hitter with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning for the only Finlandia hit of the first game.

The Lions (0-2) were led in the second game by Eli Luoma with a 3-for-3 day and the only RBI.

In the opener, Gettysburg exploded for nine runs in the second inning. Smith opened the inning with a walk, before stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball. Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) had an RBI groundout to short to give the Bullets the 1-0 lead. Gettysburg had eight of the next nine batters in the inning plate runs for the convincing lead.

Smith added a double in the inning while Gossweiler had a second RBI to his credit.

The Bullets added two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to round out their scoring.

In the home half of the seventh, Spicer gave up a lead-off walk to Scott Hueckman. After back-to-back strikeouts, Davis singled home Hueckman to break up the bid at a no-hitter.

Spicer finished with 12 strikeouts in game one.

In the nightcap, three straight Lion errors in the first inning led to a 3-0 Gettysburg lead en route to the 9-1 victory.

Ron Lettieri (South Hempstead, NY/Southside), Brandon McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) and Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) all reached and scored off Finlandia miscues to spot the Bullets their early lead.

The Lions plated their only run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning. Joe Linna led off with a double. With one away, Luoma singled Linna home to avoid the shutout.

Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) went the distance for Gettysburg, scattering four hits and striking out eight.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday with a single game against Richard Stockton. Game time is 10 a.m. in Cocoa, Fla.
