Box Score
ORLANDO, Fla. – Amy Farrell (Ambler,
PA/Upper Dublin) scored with 2:21 remaining to break
a 9-all tie and send fourth-ranked Gettysburg to an 11-10
win over Trinity (Conn.) in non-conference women’s lacrosse
action on Thursday.
Elizabeth Walsh’s goal
with 20 seconds left kept the Bantams (1-1) within a goal,
but Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) corralled
the ensuing draw control and the Bullets (5-0) ran out the
clock to seal their fifth straight victory to open the 2004
season.
Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle
Place) led Gettysburg with a career-high four goals
while Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County)
added a goal and four assists. Katie Lowe (Setauket,
NY/Ward Melville) chipped in with her second consecutive
hat trick.
Trinity junior Beatrice Gratry,
who scored nine times in a season-opening victory against
Scranton on Tuesday, continued her torrid start with three
goals and three assists. Tracy Nesbit added
two goals and an assist while Alexandra Benjamin
made 13 saves.
Trailing by as many as three goals in
the first half, the Bullets didn’t take a lead until the game’s
final 17 minutes and weren’t able to secure the win until
the closing seconds.
Gratry’s second goal of the opening half
staked the Bantams to a 6-3 lead before Gettysburg rallied
with a 5-1 run across both halves. Kelly converted a free-position
shot with 1:27 left to start the burst, then scored off a
Blankenship feed with 16 ticks remaining to pull the Bullets
within 6-5 at the break.
Shihadeh’s lone goal of the day evened
the score at 6 just 2:58 into the second half. Gratry scored
unassisted at the 37:51 mark to restore Trinity’s lead, but
Blankenship set up Lowe at 40:17, then finished a solo run
at 43:56 to put Gettysburg ahead for the first time at 8-7.
The Bantams responded behind a pair of
assists from Gratry that set up goals by Meredith Murphy
and Catherine Neil to make it 9-8 with 9:08
remaining.
Lowe squared the game at 9 with a free-position
goal at 54:16 before Farrell tallied the go-ahead marker off
a Blankenship assist with 2:21 remaining. Kelly and Walsh
traded goals in the final minute, but Gettysburg’s 15th and
final draw control victory closed out the win.
Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee)
made 11 saves on the day for the Bullets. The senior co-captain
needs two more to become the fourth player in program history
to record 400 career saves.
With her four-assist performance, Blankenship
became the first Bullet to top 100 career assists, finishing
the afternoon with 103.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday
in its Centennial Conference (CC) opener at home against Swarthmore.
Game time is 4 p.m. The Bullets have won three of the last
four CC championships.
