COCOA, Fla. – Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) was 2-for-4 in the opener to lead Gettysburg to an 8-3 win over Pikeville in baseball action on Thursday at the Cocoa Expo in Cocoa, Fla.
The Bullets (5-5-1) remained even on the season after dropping their second game to FDU-Floham, 3-0.
Dan Armstrong (Dowingtown, PA/Dowingtown) pitched six innings against Pikeville to pick up his first win of the spring, allowing five hits and striking out three.
The Bears got on the board in the top of the first inning when Donald Tardy was hit by a pitch to open the game. After advancing to second on a passed ball, Tardy came around to score on a Rafael Marcano RBI groundout.
Gettysburg answered in the bottom of the second with a pair of runs helped in part by Austin Ball (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown). Smith singled and advanced to second on a single by Mike Cipolloni (Riegelsville, PA/Germantown Academy). After he scored on a throwing error, Ball laced a ball to the outfield for a triple to score Cipolloni and give the Bullets a 2-1 advantage.
Emmanuel Maestre tied the game at 2-all, reaching on his second hit of the day and scoring on an Frankie Alvarado single.
Gettysburg regained the advantage in the bottom of the fourth on a Ball sacrifice fly that scored Smith.
Tardy scored his second run of the day in the top of the fifth to tied the game for the final time as the Bullets answered with two in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth for the win.
In the fifth, Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) was hit by a pitch to start the inning before Ryan Lenihan (Old Tappan, NJ/Northern Valley Regional) drew a walk to put runners on first and second with nobody out.
A Smith groundout advanced the runners a bag before Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) singled home Luteran and Cipolloni hit into a fielder's choice to score Lenihan and give the Orange and Blue a 5-3 edge en route to the win.
In the nightcap, Shawn Eickhorst led off the fifth inning with a double to break up Tom Gallione's (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) bid for a no-hitter and later scored on a throwing error to give FDU-Florham a 1-0 lead.
Eickhorst added a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to stretch the lead to 3-0, but Gettysburg went quietly in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory for the Devils.
Ball was 2-for-3 in the second game and Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) was 2-for-4.
Gallione went the distance for the Bullets, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out two.
The Bullets continue their Florida trip on Friday with two games. Gettysburg plays Daniel Webster at 10 a.m. and Oneonta State at 1 p.m.
