COCOA, Fla. – Ron Lettieri (South Hempstead, NY/Southside) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored to lift Gettysburg to a 5-4 victory over Daniel Webster in the first of two baseball games on Friday at the Cocoa Expo.
Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) added 2-for-4 days from the plate to help the Bullets (7-5-1) avenge an earlier loss to Oneonta State, winning 4-3 in nine innings.
Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) picked up his initial victory of the 2004 campaign, pitching 2 1/3 innings of no-hit ball in relief in the Daniel Webster game.
Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) pitched the final two innings of the game against the Red Dragons for his second win of the season.
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, Smith led off the ninth inning with a single before advancing to second on a Gossweiler sacrifice bunt, and scoring on Anthony Cavallo's (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) only base hit of the game.
Oneonta rallied to plate one run in the bottom of the seventh inning and tie the game at 3. Brandon Galutz was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He stole second before a Mike VanPatten two-out double scored Galutz to even the score. Whitman enduced Chris Brew into a groundout to end the inning.
The Bullets got all three of their runs in the third inning, started when Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) reached on an error. A Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) triple scored Ball before he came around to score on a Lettieri single. Back-to-back singles by Luteran and Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) allowed Lettieri to score and spot Gettysburg a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Brad Guszack led off with a walk. VanPatten singled, and Brew knocked home Guszack on a sacrifice fly to right field to cut the lead to 3-1.
Back-to-back singles by Greg Sulz and Brent Tortarella allowed VanPatten to round the bases to make it a one-run game.
In the opener, the Bullets spotted Daniel Webster a 4-2 lead after the first inning before battling back and scoring twice in the third inning and plating the winning run in the sixth.
In the decisive sixth, Pernice ripped a one-out double and scored on a Lettieri single two batters later to give Gettysburg the victory.
Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) was hit by a pitch to give Gettysburg its first runner with one out. Lettieri and Luteran singled, allowing Straub to score. Lettieri made it 2-0 when he scored on an error by the shortstop.
Six straight singles in the first allowed the Eagles to open the advantage before the Bullets made their comeback.
In the third, it was doubles from McDonald and Gossweiler as well as a single by Smith and a Cavallo sacrifice fly that accounted for the two Bullet runs.
Gettysburg concludes its southern swing on Saturday with a single game against Oneonta State. Game time is 10 a.m.
