Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville,
MD/Loyola) made 16 saves and Kevin Smith (Baltimore,
MD/McDonogh) collected a career-high four points as
fourth-ranked Gettysburg defeated No. 8 Hampden-Sydney 10-8
in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
Vaughan recorded 10 of his stops in a
highlight-reel first half, helping the Bullets (3-0) build
an 8-1 second-quarter lead en route to a win in their first
meeting with the Tigers (4-2) since 1999. Smith, who scored
twice and dished out two assists, had a hand in both of Gettysburg’s
crucial third-quarter goals to keep the visitors at arms length
down the stretch.
Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin)
and Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown)
added two goals apiece in the win. Van Nostrand also picked
up an assist to move into a tie for ninth on the program’s
all-time career points list (170).
Sean McChesney netted a
pair of goals for Hampden-Sydney while Thomas Jennings
and Michael Via each chipped in with a goal
and an assist.
Taking advantage of eight Tiger turnovers
– among them six failed clearing attempts – the Bullets threatened
to run away with the game in the opening half.
Hampden-Sydney’s Chris Schaaf
scored inside of the first five minutes to give his team a
1-0 lead, but Gettysburg rattled off eight straight goals
in a span of 15 minutes, 34 seconds, starting with Stewart’s
rip off an Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola)
feed at 7:33.
Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New
Canaan) finished a slashing half-field solo run at
5:43 of the first to put the Bullets ahead to stay. Van Nostrand
scored off a feed from Smith at 3:40 and Gallant netted a
spectacular spinning goal off a cross-zone feed from Jay
Mayes (Pikesville, MD/McDonogh) with 3.1 seconds left
in the quarter.
The Gettysburg barrage continued unabated
through the opening minutes of the second. Van Nostrand, Brian
Ford (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Smith scored goals
in a span of 56 seconds to make it 7-1. Alec Knight
(Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) capped the burst off
a feed from Van Nostrand with 6:59 left until halftime.
Via started the Tigers’ long climb back
with an unassisted goal just 31 seconds after Knight’s marker.
Tom FitzGerald finished a solo move at 4:33
to make it 8-3 at the break.
Jennings pulled Hampden-Sydney within
8-4 less than two minutes into the third quarter, and Vince
Smith and Matt Fasnacht scored goals
within a span of 83 seconds to make it 9-6. Stewart gave the
Bullets’ crucial breathing room, however, by finished a feed
from Kevin Smith with 28.7 seconds left in the quarter.
McChesney scored 39 seconds into the
final period and converted Hampden-Sydney’s lone man-up goal
with 7:56 remaining to cut the deficit to 10-8.
Vaughan and the Gettysburg defense, however,
kept the Tigers off the board the rest of the way. The freshman
net-minder made four fourth-quarter stops while Ben
Roberts (Longmeadow, MA/Westminster) and Matt
Smith (Lansdale, PA/Germantown Acad.) registered key
takeaways to seal the win, the Bullets’ first in their last
three meetings with Hampden-Sydney.
Gettysburg’s Campbell Henry (Chapel
Hill, NC/Episcopal [VA]) battled Tiger preseason All-American
Ryan Fassnacht to a virtual deadlock at the
face-off “X”, winning 11 of 22 draws.
Hampden-Sydney finished 1-of-5 on extra-man
opportunities. The Bullets’ man-up unit didn’t see the field
on Saturday, but Gettysburg did convert a pair of goals in
delayed penalty situations.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday
at home against second-ranked Middlebury. Game time is 3:30
p.m.
