Box Score
COCOA, Fla. – Greg Sulz hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the sixth to break a 1-all tie and give Oneonta State a 3-1 lead en route to a 5-2 victory over Gettysburg on Saturday in the final day of the trip to Cocoa, Fla., for both teams.
Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) had a 3-for-4 day to lead the Bullets (7-6-1), including an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning.
Brandon Galutz and Rob Elmendorf led the Red Dragons (7-3) with a pair of hits while Galutz added two RBIs and two doubles.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Elmendorf started Oneonta's four-run inning with a single. After Thomas Colt reached on an error, Mike VanPatten loaded the bases with a single of his own.
Brent Tortarella reached on a fielder's choice as Gettysburg thirdbaseman Ron Lettieri (South Hempstead, NY/Southside) elected to go home and protect the tie.
Sulz knocked home Colt and VanPatten on his only hit of the day, and Galutz added some insurance with a bases-clearing double.
The Bullets attempt at a comeback failed in the seventh. With two out, Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) singled to start a Gettysburg rally.
Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) followed with a single of his own before a Smith double scored Ball. With the tying run at the plate, John Schofield forced Lettieri to pop out to end the threat and give the Red Dragons the series win of a three-game set over the week in Florida.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that Oneonta State broke onto the scoreboard when back-to-back two-out doubles by Galutz and Mike Schellinger gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead.
The Bullets answered right back in the sixth. Smith reached on a single and Lettieri walked to give Gettysburg two on with one out.
After a pitching change, Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) reached on a error, allowing Smith to score to knot the game at 1. Back-to-back strikeouts prevented any further damage.
Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) pitched the sixth inning in relief of Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) and picked up the loss.
The Bullets open their conference schedule on Tuesday at Johns Hopkins. Game time is 3 p.m.
