BALTIMORE, Md. – Johns Hopkins plated at least one run in each of its last four innings to come from behind and defeat visiting Gettysburg in the Centennial Conference (CC) baseball opener for both teams on Tuesday.
Mike Durgala helped the Blue Jays (14-0, 1-0 CC) remain undefeated on the season with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, including a two-run homerun in the seventh.
Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) had the only multiple-hit day for the Bullets (7-7-1, 0-1 CC) with a 2-for-3 showing. He also added one RBI.
Durgala's homerun in the bottom of the seventh completed a comeback that had Johns Hopkins down 2-0 after four innings and 3-1 after the Gettysburg sixth.
After Paul Winterling had a solo homer in the sixth to pull the hosts within one, Durgala sent a ball over the left-field fence with one on and one out in the inning that gave the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead.
Brian Morley reached on an error in the home eighth, and advanced to third on a Doug Hitchner sacrifice bunt before. A Tim Casale sacrifice fly to right allowed Morley to score to set the final margin.
Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) led off the game with his first collegiate home run to give the Bullets an early 1-0 lead.
Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) – pinch running for catcher Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) – advanced to second on a balk in the fourth inning. He advanced to third on a groundout before stealing home to give Gettysburg a 2-0 advantage.
The teams traded runs in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth to set up the final comeback by Johns Hopkins.
Gossweiler picked up his first loss of the spring, pitching two innings of relief for starter Tom Gallione (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley).
The Bullets were plagued by five errors in the game, leading three of the five Blue Jays runs to be unearned.
Gettysburg returns to action to complete the series with Johns Hopkins on Friday in its home opener. Game time is 3 p.m.
