Top-ranked Middlebury uses big first half to down Gettysburg, 14-5

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Elizabeth Renehan collected a game-high six points and Kim Walker scored four goals to lead top-ranked Middlebury over No. 4 Gettysburg 14-5 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Thursday.

Renehan netted both of her goals and all four assists in the first half, helping the Panthers (4-0) build an 11-3 halftime lead and cruise to victory in their first-ever meeting with the Bullets (6-1). Walker also did all her damage before the break, collecting her first three markers on a natural hat trick to fuel a decisive 7-0 run.

Michele Bergofsky added two goals and two assists for the Panthers.

Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) scored twice and dished out two assists for Gettysburg, which lost for just the third time in its last 28 games. Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Arriving at Memorial Field as the Bullets’ first top-ranked opponent since 2000, Middlebury lived up to its No. 1 status.

Liza Humes put the Panthers ahead to stay just 1 minute, 34 seconds into the contest, then assisted on a Bergofsky goal at 4:33 to make it 2-0. Reeahan set up Beth Seeley 32 seconds later and the visitors had a quick 3-0 cushion.

Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) put Gettysburg on the scoreboard with a one-touch tip-in at 7:19 and Blankenship followed with an unassisted tally, but it was as close as the Bullets would get.

Middlebury regrouped with a timeout, then started a seven-goal run when Renehan fed Bergofsky at 13:28. Walker scored the next three in the burst, including a free-position goal at 14:42 and her third scored off another Renehan assist at 25:25.

Two goals by Renehan and one from Nuala O’Donohoe in a span of 34 seconds made it 10-2. Gettysburg’s Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) snapped the run with 14 seconds left in the half, but Walker struck again with one second to spare before intermission, giving the Panthers an 11-3 edge.

Blankenship notched an assist and a free-position goal in the second half to close the day with 230 career points, leaving her three shy of Pam Williams (233 from 1985-88) for fourth place on the Bullets’ all-time list.

Gettysburg goalie Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) also continued her climb up the program’s career saves list, moving into third place with 410 after notching six stops on Thursday.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against Ursinus. Game time is 1 p.m.
