Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Chase Stewart (Downingtown,
PA/Downingtown) collected a career-high eight points
to help fourth-ranked Gettysburg defeat Swarthmore 16-3 in
the Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse opener for both
teams on Saturday.
Stewart scored five goals and dished
out three assists as the Bullets (4-1, 1-0 CC) built a 10-3
halftime lead and cruised to their 11th straight victory over
the Garnet (3-4, 0-1 CC). Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin,
NY/Baldwin) added a hat trick for Gettysburg, leaving
him one goal shy of 100 for his collegiate career.
Sean McTernan (Cortlandt Manor,
NY/Hendrick Hudson) added two goals and an assist
for Gettysburg, which outshot Swarthmore, 55-17. Bullet goalie
Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola) made 11
saves, his fifth consecutive double-digit save total this
season.
Tim Chryssikos scored one
goal and dished out one assist for the Garnet, which saw its
three-game winning streak come to a halt. Steven Isbister
finished with 15 saves.
With Stewart contributing the first three
of his eight points, Gettysburg raced to a 6-2 lead after
one quarter and never looked back.
Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola)
opened the scoring off an assist from Matt Twombly (New
Canaan, CT/New Canaan) at the 11:35 mark of the first
and Van Nostrand made it 2-0 off a Stewart assist less than
a minute later.
Chryssikos set up John Cleaver
to put Swarthmore on the board, but unassisted goals from
Brian Ford (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Van
Nostrand gave the Bullets a 4-1 lead. Garnet scoring leader
Joe DeSimone connected on his 19th goal of the
season at 1:23, but the visitors would get no closer the rest
of the way.
Stewart netted a wrap-around tally with
57.5 seconds left in the quarter, then set up McTernan with
20.2 ticks remaining to put Gettysburg ahead 6-2. Chryssikos
scored the first goal of the second quarter, but the Bullets
collected the next four to take a 10-3 lead into the locker
room. Freshman Trip Dyer (Ocean View, DE/Worcester Prep
[MD]) scored his first collegiate goal during the
run.
The Bullets held Swarthmore to no goals
on four shots in the second half, scoring three times in each
of the final two quarters to close the game. Like Dyer in
the first half, sophomore Michael Misci (North Andover,
MA/Brooks School) netted his first collegiate goal
with 7:55 left in the fourth period.
Stewart’s five-goal outing matched a
single-game career high, set against Washington & Lee
in 2003. The sophomore’s career-high single-game point total
had been six, coming on six assists against Franklin &
Marshall last year.
Gettysburg improved to 58-5 all-time
in CC regular-season games, including a 39-2 mark since 1998.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday
at Muhlenberg. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
