Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Kathy Delauney (Lutherville,
MD/Roland Park Country School) matched a career high
with five goals, leading fourth-ranked Gettysburg over Ursinus
12-8 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action
on Saturday.
Delauney, who also scored five times
in the season opener at Messiah, staked her team to an early
3-1 lead with a pair of goals, then added three more after
halftime to help the Bullets (7-1, 2-0 CC) post their 19th
consecutive conference victory and fourth straight win against
the Bears (1-3, 0-2 CC).
Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin)
posted her third hat trick of the season for Gettysburg while
Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County)
tallied a goal and four assists to move into fourth place
on Gettysburg’s all-time career points list (235).
Oksana Yaworsky led Ursinus
with three goals while Emily Durkin chipped
in with two goals and two assists. Casey Leap
also scored twice for the Bears, who dropped their third straight
game.
With the draw control and shot totals
virtually even throughout the day, the Bullets used timely
goal scoring and steady defense to capture arguably the CC’s
biggest rivalry.
Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga)
finished a smooth feed from Blankenship to open the scoring
at 2:27 and Delauney followed with a barreling solo run to
make it 2-0. Yaworsky answered from Durkin at 6:58, but Delauney
struck again to restore Gettysburg’s two-goal lead.
Durkin converted a free-position shot
at 17:18, but Farrell started her hat trick off Blankenship’s
second assist less than a minute later.
Intent on showing that last season’s
two double-digit losses to the Bullets were an aberration,
Ursinus clamped down on the defensive end and cut the lead
to 4-3 when Lindsay Givens scored in front off
a high feed from Ashley Ettinger at 21:16.
With her team clinging to a one-goal
lead, Gettysburg goalie Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee)
got into the act with three of her eight saves, holding the
fort until Farrell cashed in a free-position chance with 42
seconds left in the half to make it 5-3.
The Bullets, however, weren’t finished
for the half. Blankenship got free and scored her only goal
of the game with three seconds remaining, giving the home
squad a more comfortable 6-3 edge.
Shihadeh opened the second half in identical
fashion to the first, scoring off a Blankenship pass just
48 seconds after halftime to push the lead to 7-3. Goals from
Leap and Yaworsky pulled the Bears within 7-5, but Gettysburg
followed with a 4-0 run to seal the win.
Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville)
one-timed a behind-the-net feed from Blankenship to start
the burst. Delauney scored twice in 84 seconds and Farrell
followed with another free-position goal to make it 11-5.
Delauney matched her career-high goal
total with a fifth unassisted tally at 54:12 to close the
Bullet scoring. The junior finished with a team-best nine
of Gettysburg’s 25 shots.
Sophomore Jamie Heeneke (Pennsauken,
NJ/Moorestown) spear-headed the Bullets’ defensive
effort, matching Farrell and Shihadeh with a team-best five
ground balls while forcing three turnovers and winning one
draw control.
Blankenship, who cruised past Pam Williams
(233 career points from 1985-88) on Gettysburg’s all-time
points list, needs 22 more to eclipse former teammate Becky
Bucha (256 from 1999-2002) for third place.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday
at home against Franklin & Marshall in a rematch of last
season’s CC championship game, an 8-6 Gettysburg victory.
Game time is 4 p.m.
