ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin,
NY/Baldwin) collected a game-high five points and
John O’Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland) netted
his first hat trick of the season to lead fifth-ranked Gettysburg
over Muhlenberg 16-3 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse
action on Wednesday.
The senior duo tallied five of its eight
points in the first quarter, helping the Bullets (5-1, 2-0
CC) jump to a 6-0 lead. O’Bannon scored all three of his goals
in the game’s first 13:13 while Van Nostrand notched the 100th
of his collegiate career with 2:44 left in the first quarter,
finishing with two goals and three assists.
Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola)
made nine saves for Gettysburg, which won for the 40th time
in its last 42 CC games while snapping the Mules’ four-game
winning streak.
John Kushay, Bradley
Lutzer and James Robinson scored for
Muhlenberg (5-2, 0-1 CC), in its second varsity season after
returning from a 22-year hiatus in 2003.
Similar to Saturday’s win by an identical
score against Swarthmore, Gettysburg scored early and often.
O’Bannon started the barrage with two
goals in the first 4:32, the latter set up by Chase
Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown). Matt
Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) scored unassisted
at 4:01 and Van Nostrand netted career goal No. 100 with 2:44
left in the quarter.
O’Bannon finished his hat trick off a
Van Nostrand feed 57 seconds later and Jon Sowanick
(Bethesda, MD/Bullis) scored his second goal in as
many games to put the Bullets ahead 6-0 after one period.
Stewart, Kevin Smith (Baltimore,
MD/McDonogh) and Twombly all scored in the first seven
minutes of the second quarter to make it 9-0 before the Mules
got on the board, courtesy of Kushay with 4:40 left in the
half.
Van Nostrand picked up his third point
of the game assisting Alec Knight’s (Baltimore, MD/Calvert
Hall) goal to close the half. Gettysburg led by as
many as 13 on a Nick Purkat (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson)
goal that made it 14-1 with 10:36 remaining.
Bullet freshmen Jimmy Gates (Basking
Ridge, NJ/Ridge) and Andrew Mavraganis (Lancaster,
PA/Hempfield) tallied their first collegiate goals
to close out the scoring.
Twombly, Smith and Knight finished with
two goals apiece for Gettysburg while Campbell Henry
(Chapel Hill, NC/Episcopal [VA]) won 13 of 16 face-offs.
Justin Hollander added
an assist for the Mules. Gavin Crescenzo made
nine of his team’s 11 saves.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday
at home against top-ranked Salisbury, the defending Division
III national champions. Game time is 1 p.m.
