Bullets rally to edge St. Mary’s, 10-9; Kelly nets game-winner in final minutes

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) scored with 2:37 remaining to snap a 9-all tie and lift seventh-ranked Gettysburg over No. 8 St. Mary’s (Md.) 10-9 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Kelly’s goal, her first of the season, capped the Bullets’ rally from a 9-6 deficit with 13:03 remaining. The Gettysburg defense withstood a number of Seahawk chances down the stretch, including near-misses by Allyson Sarigianis and Danielle Miller in the final 50 seconds.

Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) scored one of her team-high four goals during the comeback while Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) assisted on the game-tying and game-winning tallies. Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School) converted a pair of free-position goals in the win, helping the Bullets (2-0) cash in five of their 10 8-meter opportunities.

Sarah Sloane led St. Mary’s (3-1) with four goals while Carol Schmoeller added two goals and two assists apiece. Goalie Jen Chumley, Division III’s save-percentage leader in 2002 and 2003, made nine saves in the loss.

Trailing by three after Schmoeller’s unassisted finish at 46:57, Gettysburg rallied with four goals in 10 minutes to pull out the victory.

Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) started the comeback, taking a feed from Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) and firing a shot past Chumley one minute after Schmoeller’s goal.

Farrell’s second free-position goal of the game pulled the Bullets within 9-8 at 50:09. Twenty-five seconds later, Blankenship fed a cutting Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep), who hit the net to knot the game at 9.

Chumley stopped Farrell and Delauney to preserve the tie, but a turnover behind the Seahawk net gave Gettysburg its golden opportunity. Blankenship fired a behind-the-net pass to Kelly, who knocked the ball down, then shoveled it across the goal-line to make it 10-9 with 2:37 left.

St. Mary’s took possession for the final time with 55 seconds left, but couldn’t convert the game-tying goal. The Seahawks’ best chance came when Sarigianis fired a point-blank shot just high of the cage with 46 seconds remaining. Miller’s final attempt bounced wide with 1.8 ticks left.

After an even first half, the Seahawks used four straight goals to build their 9-6 lead. Miller tied the game at 6 off an assist from Kate Story and Karli Libertini set up Schmoeller 1 minute, 50 seconds later to make it 7-6.

Story tallied her lone goal of the day at 42:58 to force a Bullet timeout. Schmoeller capped the burst with an unassisted goal at 46:57.

Sloane scored three of her four goals in the first half, staking St. Mary’s to a 4-3 lead with 2:03 left before the break. Delauney needed only 17 seconds to tie the game at 4 with Gettysburg’s third free-position goal of the half.

With her four-goal outing, Farrell moved into ninth place on the program’s career points list (133). She needs two goals to become the 10th player in program history with 100 career goals.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at ninth-ranked Mary Washington. Game time is 4 p.m.
