Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - John O'Bannon (Marshall,
VA/Highland School) scored two goals to lead tenth-ranked
Gettysburg past No. 12 Washington & Lee 6-2 in non-conference
men's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Freshman Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville,
MD/Loyola Blakefield) made 11 saves in his collegiate
debut to help the Bullets (1-0) hold the Generals (2-2) to
only two goals, their fewest since 1995 and lowest output
in the 20-game series between the two teams.
Richard Williams and Mike
McNamara each collected a goal for Washington & Lee
while Mark McLewee and Matt Arcati
handed out the assists.
Gettysburg never trailed in its ninth consecutive
season-opening victory and first-ever win on the new turf
of Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
In a defensive first quarter, O'Bannon found
the back of the net with 2:28 remaining to give the Bullets
the early 1-0 lead. He struck again unassisted, but not until
the 11:14 mark of the second quarter for a 2-0 edge.
Four more goals were scored in the second
quarter, including Williams' goal from McLewee at the 7:14
mark to put the Generals on the board. Bryan Pryor (Dallas,
TX/St. Mark's) waited four minutes before responding
with his first goal of the season to put Gettysburg up 3-1.
Behind the cage, Arcati found McNamara straight
down the middle to help the Generals inch closer to the Bullets
at 3-2 with 2:02 left in the second quarter. Forty seconds
later, Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan)
spun and converted his shovel shot off a feed Chase
Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) to give Gettysburg
a two-goal lead at halftime.
Kevin Smith (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh
School) blasted a shot into the lower right corner
for the lone goal of the third quarter to make it 5-2 with
7:08 left to play. Alec Knight (Baltimore, MD/Calvert
Hall College) scored the final marker of the game,
collecting the rebound off Smith's shot and finding the back
of the net with 2:28 remaining.
Matt Stanley (Fallston, MD/Calvert
Hall College) led the defense with three caused turnovers
and three ground balls. Vaughan recorded a team-best five
ground balls on the day.
The Bullets blasted 26 shots with Washington
& Lee's Ansel Sanders stopping 10 of them.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday
at No. 3 SUNY Cortland. Game time is 1 p.m.
