ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the first game before coming on in relief in the nightcap to pick up his first collegiate win, and lead Gettysburg to a sweep of St. Mary's (Md.) in baseball action on Sunday.
The Bullets (2-0) scored a single run in the second inning of the opener and never trailed en route to a 3-1 win. In game two, the Seahawks (5-4-1) held a one-run lead before the visitors plated four runs in the top of the seventh to comeback and win, 10-7.
Senior Tom Gallione (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) recorded the win in game one, allowing one run on nine hits with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) worked the last inning and a third to notch the save.
Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) drew a walk to open the Gettysburg second. Back-to-back singles by Pat Flynn (New York, NY/Poly Prep Country Day School) and Gossweiler enabled Smith to score and give the Bullets a 1-0 advantage.
In the sixth, Mike Cipolloni (Riegelsville, PA/Germantown Academy) started the offense once again with a double to the gap in left-center. Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) was hit by a pitch before Smith dropped a bunt single to load the bases. After Flynn hit into a fielder's choice, Gossweiler notched his second RBI on the day with a hit to shortstop. Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) knocked home Smith on a fielder's choice before a Ron Lettieri (South Hempstead, NY/Southside) flyout to left prevented any further damage.
In the home half of the sixth with one down, Andrew Sohn doubled to left, and scored on Travis Herrick single. Herrick advanced to second on a throwing error, but Spicer came on relief to induce a flyout and groundout.
Smith ended game one 2-for-2 and scored twice. Cipolloni was 2-for-4 with the one double.
With one out in the seventh inning, trailing 7-6 in the nightcap, Smith reached on a fielding error to start the Bullet comeback. Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster) singled to left. Smith scored from second on a Flynn single to the gap in right-center to knot the game at 7-all. Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) – pinchrunning for McNamara – advanced to third, and Flynn went to second on the throw. Ball singled to center to clear the bases and give Gettysburg the 9-7 lead. Pernice set the final margin when Ball scored from second on his single to right.
Gosweiler allowed just one St. Mary's runner to reach in the bottom half to preserve the lead and pick up the win.
The Bullets struck early when pinch-runner Jon Giordano (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) scored from third on a Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) single to center with one out in the first.
The hosts had the answer in the bottom half of the inning, however. Back-to-back base hits down the right field line put runners on second and third with no outs. Matt Engelau scored from third on a Sohn groundout to shortstop before Tracy Vallandingham scored on a passed ball to make it 2-1. Dan Armstrong (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) notched back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.
Gettysburg came roaring back to take a 6-2 lead, plating five runs in the top of the second inning. McNamara reached by strikeout-throwing error to open the frame. Flynn singled to left and Ball to right to load the bases.
After a Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) sacrifice fly to score McNamara, Pernice hit an RBI single to left to allow Flynn to cross the plate. With runners on second and third, Lettieri singled to right to clear the bags. He then advanced to second on throwing error and scored on a ball McDonald put in play.
In the inning, the Bullets scored their five runs on four hits and three Seahawk errors.
St. Mary's took the lead back, scoring three times in the fifth and twice in the sixth before the fateful seventh inning.
In the fifth, the Seahawks three scores came on three straight extra-base hits. With one aboard, Vallandingham doubled, Sohn tripled and Herrick doubled to each record an RBI.
In the sixth, it was a walk and three singles that helped St. Mary's tally.
Pernice was a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap for Gettysburg with a pair of RBIs and a run scored while Lettieri, Ball and Flynn were all 2-for-4. Ball scored twice and had two RBIs, Lettieri plated once and knocked home two while Flynn tallied twice and had one RBI.
The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at Catholic. Game time is 3 p.m.
