Three bag hat tricks as Gettysburg rolls past Mary Washington, 12-7

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School), Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) and Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) collected hat tricks to lift fifth-ranked Gettysburg over No. 9 Mary Washington 12-7 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Tuesday.

Delauney scored the game’s first three goals, helping the Bullets (3-0) jump to a 6-0 lead en route to their fourth consecutive victory over the Eagles (2-1). Blankenship and Shihadeh combined for four of their six goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half to put the game out of reach.

Blankenship chipped in with a pair of assists, moving her into a tie for first place on the program’s career assists list with former teammate Megan Murphy (97). The senior co-captain has 16 points in her first three games this season.

Gettysburg goalie Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) made nine saves as the Bullets’ defense held Mary Washington off the board for nearly 18 minutes to open the game.

Erica Larsen tallied twice for the Eagles while Kate Clute dished out two assists in the loss.

Seeking to avoid a second straight nail-biter after Saturday’s 10-9 come-from-behind win over St. Mary’s (Md.), the Bullets left little doubt by recording the game's first six goals.

Delauney opened the scoring at 2:55, then converted the first of four Gettysburg free-position goals at 11:24. She capped her natural hat trick at the 13:43 mark, giving the Bullets a quick 3-0 lead.

Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) and Shihadeh scored goals within a span of 21 seconds to push the lead to 5-0. Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place), who tallied Saturday’s game-winner in the closing minutes, capped the run with a free-position goal at 17:04.

Larsen put Mary Washington on the board with an unassisted marker at 17:52. Jackie Rose and Larsen followed with back-to-back goals that cut the deficit to three, but Blankenship coverted a free-position chance with 9.2 seconds left before halftime to make it 7-3 at the half.

Gettysburg netted five of the first six goals after the break to seal the win.

Blankenship scored 2:05 into the half and Shihadeh struck twice in a span of 1 minute, 25 seconds for a 10-3 Bullet advantage. Goals from Blankenship and Alexandra Ewing (Monkton, MD/Garrison Forest) just 26 seconds apart pushed the lead to 12-4 with 18:55 remaining.

With her hat trick, Delauney continues to lead the team with 10 goals. Shihadeh’s three-goal outing was the first of her collegiate career.

As a team, Gettysburg has converted 11 of 21 free-position shots (52 percent) in its first three games.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday against Babson in Orlando, Fla. Game time is 7 p.m.
