College of New Jersey uses late burst to subdue Gettysburg, 13-8

Box Score

EWING, N.J. – Katie Wagenblast and Carin Heller combined for nine goals as second-ranked College of New Jersey scored the final six goals of a 13-8 win over No. 5 Gettysburg in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Two of Wagenblast’s game-high five goals came during a four-goal second-half outburst in a span of 1 minute, 32 seconds, a run that turned the Lions’ 8-7 deficit into a three-goal lead with 9:17 remaining. Heller capped the decisive burst with the last of her four goals on the afternoon, helping TCNJ (7-0) improve to 5-0 all-time against the Bullets (11-2).

Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) scored three times and added one assist for Gettysburg, which lost for the first time in its last 15 road games. Prior to Saturday, the Bullets’ most recent road loss came during their last trip to Lion Stadium in 2002.

Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) scored twice for Gettysburg while goalie Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) kept her team in the game with 12 saves.

Trailing 8-7 with 12:50 to play, the Lions used their quick-strike offense to turn the back-and-forth battle in their favor.

Minutes after Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) gave the Bullets’ their final lead of the game on a free-position goal, Wagenblast shoveled a backhanded shot past Borucki to tie the contest at 8. Borucki stopped Heller on TCNJ’s next trip, but Jessica Lacontora kept the possession alive with a ground ball and Bridget Bigley finished a solo run to make it 9-8 with 9:52 left.

The Lions won the ensuing draw control and Wagenblast’s quick-stick goal off a feed from Lacontora made it 10-8 and forced a Gettysburg timeout. Twelve seconds later, Heller completed a solo run off another draw control win to push the lead to 11-8.

Lion goalie Megan Marquardt made two of her five saves on shots by Blankenship and Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School) to preserve the three-goal lead. Lauren Dougher scored twice in the final four minutes to seal the victory.

TCNJ struck for the game’s first two goals before Blankenship keyed a 4-0 Bullet run. The senior fed Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) at 11:39, then scored on a tough inside run at 15:21 to make it 2-2. Lowe ripped a drive past Marquardt at 16:59 and Blankenship scored on a move nearly identical to her first goal, forcing a Lion timeout at 20:29.

TCNJ rallied to tie the game at 4 on goals by Wagenblast and Heller. Delauney bounced home her team-leading 31st goal of the season to make it 5-4 Gettysburg at halftime.

Heller scored early in the second half to pull the Lions even at 5, but Lowe circled the net and scored in close to make it 6-5. Blankenship lasered home a free-position shot at 45:47 to complete her hat trick and give the Bullets a 7-6 lead. Heller needed 24 seconds to knot the game at 7, but Shihadeh scored from the 8-meter arc to make it 8-7 with 12:50 left.

Farrell finished with a team-high six draw controls and five ground balls on the day.
Dougher and Bigley each scored twice for TCNJ.

Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at home against McDaniel. Game time is 4 p.m.
