Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Steve Berger scored a game-high three goals and Richard Yost made 13 saves to lead third-ranked Washington over No. 5 Gettysburg 9-4 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

The Shoremen (11-0), who ended the Bullets (5-3) five-year CC reign last year, started where they left off in 2003 to capture their third straight victory over Gettysburg and remain in first place in the conference. Yost made seven saves and allowed one goal in the final two quarters, holding the Bullets to their lowest offensive output this season.

Berger, the 2003 CC Player of the Year, also dished out two assists while Sam Lane and Brent Renner each scored two goals for Washington.

John O'Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland School) led Gettysburg with two goals, while Kevin Smith (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) and Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) also found the back of the net.

Washington never trailed and used a 4-1 run in the second half to hand the Bullets their first conference loss of the season.

Berger tallied the first of his three goals to start the scoring at the 8:33 mark of the first quarter. Smith answered back with his seventh goal of the season just two minutes, 14 seconds later to knot the game at one.

The Shoremen regained the lead after Jon Spivey fed Topher Brewer with 25 seconds left in the first quarter to make it 2-1. Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) recorded his first collegiate assist on Twombly's goal at the 10:12 mark of the second quarter to even once again.

Washington scored three unanswered goals in a three-minute span to pull away and take the 5-2 lead. Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) connected with O'Bannon with only a second left in the second quarter to head into halftime with a two-goal deficit.

The defensive battle continued through the third quarter, neither team scoring until the final minute. O'Bannon netted his second goal of the game on a pass from Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/ Loyola Blakefield) with 58 seconds left to make it 5-4, but Berger completed his hat trick 26 seconds later and Renner scored again for a 7-4 lead.

The Shoremen held Gettysburg scoreless in the fourth quarter and closed the scoring on Lane's two goals for the victory.
