GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Ryan Regensburg went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored in the nightcap to lead Ursinus to a Centennial Conference (CC) sweep at Gettysburg in baseball action on Saturday.
The Bears (10-10-2, 6-5 CC) plated six unearned runs in the opener to take a 7-5 win before exploding for six second-inning runs in game two to complete the sweep with by a 10-4 margin.
Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) extended his hitting streak to 13 games, going a combined 3-for-8 as the Bullets (10-13-1, 3-7 CC) dropped their fourth straight contest.
In game one, Ursinus grabbed its only earned run of the game when Jerry Rogers led off the third inning with a single to the gap in left-center. Courtesy-runner Ben Fisher advanced on a Tommy Herrmann sacrifice bunt before scoring on Eric Shipe's double to left.
Gettysburg took the lead in the bottom of the inning, however. Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) led off with a single down the third-base line and went to second on a wild throw. He came around to score on the first of two Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) singles to tie the game at 1-all. Ball then scored from second when Ron Lettieri (South Hempstead, NY/South Side) laced a ball down the left-field line to make it 2-1.
Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) made it 3-1 in the fourth after reaching on a ball through the left side of the infield and later scoring on a Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) sacrifice fly.
In the visitor fifth, the Bears tacked on five unearned runs in part due to two Bullet errors in the first three batters of the inning.
With the bases loaded, Bret Jenkins sent a ball through the left side for his only hit and two RBIs of the game to knot the game at 3-all. Three straight singles allowed two more Ursinus runners to score and give the Bears a 6-3 advantage.
Gettysburg got two of those runs back in the sixth. Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) left off with a single down the right-field line. McDonald was called out at second on a questionable call in the next at bat. Smith, who reached on the fielder's choice, scored from second on a Carey single to the gap in left-center. Carey advanced to second on the throw and went to third on a error by the centerfielder before coming in to score, unearned, on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 6-5.
Ursinus added an insurance run in the seventh. Jenkins reached second on a two-base error and came home to score on back-to-back sacrifices for the final margin.
In the nightcap, the Bears got things going early when Herrmann led off the game with his first of three singles. After a flyout, Regensburg and Jenkins put together consecutive singles to give Ursinus the 1-0 advantage.
In the second, Ted Piotrowicz drew a walk to lead off the inning and moved to second on a Victor Rodriguez sacrifice bunt. After a groundout moved Piotrowicz to third, the Bears started a two-out rally to plate a total of six runs for an early 7-0 lead.
Herrmann went up the middle to score Piotrowicz. Shipe followed with another single up the middle and Regensburg had an RBI single through the left side.
Starter Greg Urich (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) gave way to Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley), who walked Jenkins to load to bases.
Jon Sheppard cleared the bases with a double to the left-field wall for his only three RBIs of the afternoon to make it 6-0. Matt Platco grounded to third base, but reached on a throwing error. Sheppard scored on the second Gettysburg error on the play to make it 7-0 before Piotrowicz – batting for the second time in the frame – flied out to right to end the inning.
The Bears stretched the lead to 10-0 over the next two innings before the Bullets cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth.
With Mike Lombardo allowing just one hit and one ball out of the infield through the first three innings, Lettieri sent a ball to left for a lead-off double. McDonald traded places with a double to the gap to cut the lead to 10-1. He later scored on a Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) single up the middle to make it 10-2.
After leaving the bases loaded in the fifth, the Bullets added two in the sixth. Bonyai led off with a single through the left side before coming around to score when Carey tripled to the wall in right-center.
Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) walked and Pernice flied out to short center in the next two Bullet at bats. Ball sent a shot through the right side to score Carey and advance Campo to third, but a groundout left both standing on base.
Tom Gallione (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) went the distance in game one for Gettysburg, striking out two for his third loss.
Scott Barr pitched the full seven for Ursinus in the opener, striking out four. Lombardo went the distance in the nightcap, striking out five for his first win.
As a team, the Bullets hit in double figures for the ninth straight game, but stranded a total of 14 runners in the two games and committed eight errors leading to eight unearned runs.
