Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin,
NY/Baldwin) scored four goals and Pat Vaughan
(Cockeysville, MD/Loyola) made 14 saves to lead sixth-ranked
Gettysburg over No. 19 Messiah 11-5 in non-conference men’s
lacrosse action on Wednesday.
Van Nostrand, who has 16 points in three
career games against the Falcons (6-3), jumped into the Bullets’
all-time goal-scoring top 10, surpassing Ross Garretson (103
from 1997-2000) and finishing the day with 106 career goals.
The senior’s four goals were a season high.
Vaughan continued to shine in his rookie
campaign with the aid of a Gettysburg defense that forced
17 of Messiah’s 28 turnovers. Long-stick midfielder Matt
Smith (Lansdale, PA/Germantown Acad.) caused a team-best
four turnovers and was one of three Bullets with six ground
balls.
Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New
Canaan) and Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown)
each scored twice for Gettysburg (6-3), which improved to
5-0 all-time against the Falcons.
Kevin Dennstaedt netted
a pair of goals for Messiah while fellow attackmen Jono
Linebaugh and Reed Horanburg each added
a goal and an assist. The trio fired 19 of the Falcons’ 33
shots on the afternoon.
Linebaugh’s goal tied the game at 1 midway
through the first quarter, but the Bullets rattled off the
next five to take command.
Twombly needed 30 seconds to answer Linebaugh’s
tally and put Gettysburg ahead for good at 2-1. Stewart followed
with his team-leading 18th goal of the season at the 2:15
mark.
The Bullets erupted for three goals in
65 seconds to open a 6-1 advantage. An illegal procedure penalty
put Gettysburg on the man-up and Van Nostrand cashed in a
pass from Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola)
moments after the penalty expired to make it 4-1.
Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport)
posted the first of his nine face-off wins and John
O’Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland School) scored seconds
later, pushing the lead to 5-1. Jon Sowanick (Bethesda,
MD/Bullis School) capped the burst off a feed from
Kevin Freehill (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) with 9:07
left in the half.
Vaughan was calm in the face of Messiah’s 13
second-quarter shots, turning away the first five on goal
before Danny Williams beat the halftime horn
to cut the lead to 6-2 at the break.
The Falcons, however, would get no closer
in the second half. Bullet senior Kevin Smith (Baltimore,
MD/McDonogh) lasered a shot under the cross bar to
make it 7-2 in the opening minutes of the third quarter and
Van Nostrand’s second goal at the 1:26 mark maintained the
five-goal margin at 8-3.
Van Nostrand scored his final two goals
in a span of 1 minute, 47 seconds early in the fourth quarter.
Twombly’s second goal of the game made it 11-4 with 6:24 remaining.
In addition to his goal-scoring status,
Van Nostrand needs 14 points to become the fifth player in
program history to reach the 200-point plateau. His 186 career
points ranks ninth on the program’s all-time list.
Renzi, appearing in just his second game
of the year due to a preseason injury, won 9 of 13 draws on
the day.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday
at Ursinus, the first of five consecutive Centennial Conference
games to close out the regular season. Game time is 1 p.m.
