LANCASTER, Pa. - Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) went 2-for-2 with two runs scored in game two as Gettysburg split with Franklin & Marshall Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Friday.
The Diplomats (7-11, 4-6 CC) scored the only two runs they would need in the fifth inning to hand the Bullets (17-6, 9-1 CC) their first conference loss of the season in a 2-1 game-one victory. Gettysburg broke a 1-all tie with two runs in the top of the seventh to capture the nightcap, 3-1.
Gale scored the eventual game-winning run in game two, while Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) picked up the win and fired six hitless innings for Gettysburg.
Each Franklin & Marshall starter tallied at least one hit in game one, including three hits and a RBI from Jen Fried.
Game two proved to be a pitchers' duel with both teams combining for nine hits and four runs, but faced with their last three outs, the Bullets put two runs on the scoreboard for the victory.
Gale walked to start the inning and advanced to second on Megan Pilarcik's (Middletown, MD/ Middletown) sacrifice bunt. An error at third base put Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/ Huntingdon) on first and scored Gale for the eventual game-winning run. Megan Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) hit an RBI bunt far enough out to score Hallahan for Gettysburg's second run in the final inning.
With no outs in the top of the second inning, Gale hit her team-leading seventh triple of the season into centerfield. She then tallied the first run of the game thanks to a Diplomat error on Pilarcik's appearance at the plate.
An RBI triple by Alison Barrett brought home Allison Pavero in the bottom of the fourth to knot the game at one.
After four scoreless innings in the opener, Franklin & Marshall tallied five of its 12 hits in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead and halt the Bullets comeback for the win.
Barrett collected the first hit of the inning with a single. Morgan Marks then ripped an RBI double to score Barrett. Kristyn Miller and Jonelle Coletta each singled, before Fried recorded the final hit and drove in Miller for a two run edge.
Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]) opened the sixth inning by reaching on an error and scoring on Pareso's RBI double to make it 2-1 with one out. Defensive efforts by the Diplomats held the Bullets off the board for the remaining two outs and the final inning for the win.
Barrett only allowed three hits with no earned runs and striking out three for the victory on the mound.
Gettysburg returns to action tomorrow at home against Ursinus. The first game follows the dedication ceremony for Bobby Jones Field at 1:30 p.m.
