Box Score
CARLISLE, Pa. – Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, three runs scored and drew a pair of walks as Gettysburg snapped its five-game losing streak with an 11-8 Centennial Conference (CC) baseball victory at Dickinson on Friday.
Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) had his first three-hit day of the season with a 3-for-5 showing. He also scored twice for the Bullets (11-14-1, 4-8 CC), which only had a total of four its as a team the day before.
Tre Dwinell was 5-for-5 for the Red Devils (11-13-1, 8-4-1 CC) with a double and triple and five runs scored.
Unlike the pitchers' duel in Dickinson win at Gettysburg on Thursday, the two teams brought the bats to MacPhail Field and combined for 28 hits, including three doubles and three triples.
With one out in the bottom of the first, Dwinell laced a ball to the gap in left-center for a triple. Geoff Neese followed with an single to left for his 100th career RBI to give Dickinson a 1-0 advantage. Gettysburg starter Tom Gallione (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) got the next two Red Devils to fly out to right.
The Bullets had the answer in the top of the second, tagging Miles Hunt for five straight base hits, including a triple by Smith, his first three-bag hit of the season.
After Bonyai led off with a single, Smith sent a rocket to left-center for the RBI triple and scored on a Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) single to left for the 2-1 Gettysburg lead.
The Bullets added two more in the inning to open a 4-1 lead and wouldn't trail again in the game.
Ron Lettieri (South Hempstead, NY/South Side) doubled to right-center to lead off the visitor third and scored two batters later when Smith doubled down the right field line to make it 5-1.
Dickinson responded in the bottom half of the frame with three runs to cut the deficit to 5-4. Phil Newman led off with a single. After a Dwinell double put runners on second and third, Gettysburg elected to intentionally walk Neese to load the bases with nobody out.
Hunt flied out to center to score Newman and move Dwinell and Neese up a bag. Ryan Stearrett singled to center to score the last two runs of the inning. A strikeout and fly out ended the rally and preserved the one-run Bullet lead.
Two unearned runs for Gettysburg in the fourth stretched the lead back to 7-4. The Bullets grabbed a single run in the fifth on a Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) RBI single to left.
In the bottom of the frame, the Red Devils answered with two more tallies. Dwinell singled down the right-field line. Hunt singled to center to put runners on first and second with one away.
Dwinell stole third and Stearrett hit into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with two down. A Bryan MacPhail single to the gap in right-center cleared the bases and made it an 8-6 ballgame after five.
With the bases loaded in the eighth, Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) reached on a fielder's choice, but an error by the shortstop allowed everyone to be safe and two runs to score.
Neese, who came on in relief of Hunt one batter into the inning, induced the ground ball and inning-ending double play.
Dickinson got one of those runs back in the bottom half to make it 10-7, and each team added a run in the ninth for the final margin.
Gallione went eight innings for the Bullets with six strikeouts and allowed six earned runs on 11 Red Devil hits to record the win and even his record at 3-3. Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) faced two batters in the ninth, but failed to get an out. Ross Hempel (Marriotsville, MD/Glenelg) came on with the potential-tying run on deck and got three straight outs for his first save.
Hunt picked up the loss for Dickinson, pitching six-plus innings and striking out three. Neese worked three innings, striking out two.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home in a doubleheader against Muhlenberg. The first pitch follows the dedication ceremony for Kirchhoff Field at 12:45 p.m.
