Haverford goes deep to sweep Gettysburg

Box Score – Game 1
Box Score – Game 2

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Tim McLean was 3-for-3 in game one with six RBIs, including a grand slam to lift Haverford to a 9-5 victory over Gettysburg in Centennial Conference baseball action on Sunday. The Fords (18-9, 7-8 CC) completed the sweep with a 9-7 win in game two.

McLean's grand slam in the fourth inning of game one was part of a seven-run fourth inning that propelled Haverford to the two victories, knocking the Bullets (12-17-1, 5-11 CC) out of the playoff race.

Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) led Gettysburg in the opener with a 4-for-4 performance, including a double and two-run home run, for his second four-hit game of the season. He is the only Bullet to tally four hits in a single game.

In the opener, Gettysburg grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) scored on a Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) single in the second inning.

McLean notched his first two RBIs of the afternoon in the bottom of the third with a bases-clearing single to give the Fords a 2-1 lead.

The Bullets regained the lead in the top of the fourth, however. Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) drew a walk to lead off the inning. Pinch-runner Jon Giordano (Massapequa Park. NY/Massapequa) stole second before scoring on a Ball single. Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster) followed with an RBI single of his own for the 3-2 advantage.

The Fords knotted the game at 3-all when Crispin Vary scored on passed ball, and took the lead for good when Dave Werthan scored on a Jonas Clark sacrifice fly to left.

After Ruhul Munshi walked to load the bases, McLean went yard to make it an 8-3 game.

Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) came on in relief of starter Ross Hempel (Marriottsville, MD/Glenelg) and gave up back-to-back doubles to make it 9-3.

Gettysburg got two of those runs back when Pernice hit his second homer of the season, a two-run knock in the sixth to set the final margin.

In the nightcap, Haverford's Brandon Mills led off with a single and went to third on a error to set up a Clark sacrifice fly and a 1-0 lead.

The Fords added three more in each of the second and third innings to open a 7-0 lead.

The Bullets dented into that lead with three runs in the top of the fifth. With one out, pinch hitter Pat Flynn (New York, NY/Poly Prep Country Day School) reached on an error before back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Pernice flew out to center to score Flynn before a Ball single and Haverford error allowed two more to score and make it 7-3.

After the Fords tallied twice more in the bottom half of the frame, Gettysburg added a single run in the sixth and three in the seventh for the 9-7 final.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at Villa Julie. Game time is 6 p.m.
