Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Evan Gallant (Lutherville,
MD/Loyola) and Nick Purkat (Annandale, VA/W.T.
Woodson) each collected a season-high four points
as sixth-ranked Gettysburg scored the game’s first eight goals
and cruised to a 13-4 Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse
victory over McDaniel on Wednesday.
Gallant and Purkat each scored twice
and dished out two assists to help the Bullets (8-3, 4-1 CC)
jump over Dickinson and into second place in the CC standings.
The Red Devils fell at Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday,
7-5.
Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown)
posted a hat trick for Gettysburg and Jake Van Nostrand
(Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) added two goals and an assist
in the Bullets’ eighth consecutive win over the Green Terror
(5-7, 2-3 CC). Gettysburg’s four home victories during that
run have come by an average margin of 10.3 goals per game.
Steve Hoffman and Rob
Weaver dished out two assists apiece for McDaniel,
which fell one game behind F&M for the CC’s fourth and
final playoff berth.
With usual suspects Stewart and Van
Nostrand putting up their expected numbers, the Bullets’ midfielder-turned-attackman
(Gallant) and attackman-turned-midfielder (Purkat) joined
the offensive change with their most productive days of the
2004 season.
Gallant jumped into the action early,
setting up Van Nostrand in transition following a Green Terror
turnover to make it 1-0 just 2:02 into the game. Sixty-one
seconds later, Sean McTernan (Cordlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick
Hudson) capped Gettysburg’s next trip into McDaniel
territory with his sixth goal of the season.
Purkat made it 3-0 off a Gallant assist
with 8:33 left in the first quarter, a play set up by Matt
Smith’s (Lansdale, PA/Germantown Acad.) caused turnover.
Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola) made his
first save of the afternoon on Jeremy Freed
to maintain the three-goal lead and, minutes later, Stewart
extended the margin to four off a Van Nostrand set-up at 1:26.
The Bullets kept the heat on in the second
quarter. Smith bounced the eventual game-winner past J.C.
Hutchins for his third goal of the season and Kevin
Smith (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh) pushed the lead to
6-0 with an unassisted marker at 8:16.
Van Nostrand scored man-up at 6:12 following
a Green Terror push and Stewart capped the 8-0 run off a feed
from McTernan with 5:01 left in the half.
Brad Baer and Jared
Nutter scored in the final 4:33 of the second quarter
to cut the deficit to 8-2, but Gettysburg erupted for the
first four goals of the third period to put the game away.
Stewart opened the half with his third goal at 13:42 and Gallant
scored the next two to make it 11-2. Purkat went solo at 6:13
to make it a 10-goal game.
Bullet freshman Ryan Cook (Pottstown,
PA/Owen J. Roberts) netted his first collegiate goal
in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
With his three-point day, Van Nostrand
moved into a tie with former teammate Ric Bremer
for seventh place on the program’s all-time career points
list (193). Van Nostrand is bidding to become the fifth Gettysburg
player to record 200 career points.
In addition to scoring his fifth goal
of the season, Baer won 10 of 15 face-offs and led McDaniel
with seven ground balls. Justin Merson netted
his team-leading 24th goal of the season for the Green Terror.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday
at home against Haverford. Game time is 1 p.m.
