Susquehanna leaves Gettysburg standing in 8-4 win

Box Score

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Five Susquehanna pitchers combined to hold Gettysburg to 6-for-24 with runners on, and the Crusader offense plated five runs in the seventh inning for an 8-4 victory in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.

John Curry and Eric Damm each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to help Susquehanna (7-20) snap a 10-game losing streak and win for the first time at home this season.

Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) led the Bullets (13-18-1) with a 3-for-5 day and one run scored.

With the score knotted at 3-all in the bottom of the seventh, Eric Damm led off with a single before Clay Nixon reached on an error to put runners at first and second with nobody out.

A John Spatz sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base, and Bob Haile walked to load the bases. Chris Mothershed singled home Damm to give the Crusaders a 4-3 lead.

With the bases still loaded, Ben Nyce singled but Nixon was called out on runner's interference.

Curry followed with a single of his own that scored two runs and push the lead to 6-3. With two on, Matt Reichard laced a bases-clearing triple for the 8-3 advantage.

Gettysburg starter Tom Gallione (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) gave way to Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover), who came in and induced the inning-ending ground ball and went on to retire the three batters he faced in the eighth.

The Bullets stranded four of their 12 runners in the final two innings, but managed to push one run across for the final margin. In the ninth, Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) doubled with two away. After advancing to third on a Jimmy McNamara (Webster, NY/Webster) single, Luteran came home on an Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) RBI single.

Gettysburg struck early in the contest, taking a 3-0 lead after the first two innings.

In the opening frame, Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) was hit by a pitch before stealing both second and third and scoring on a Luteran sacrifice fly.

In the second, Ball walked to open the inning before a Carey single put runners at first and second. Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) singled home Ball, and a throwing error by the Susquehanna left fielder also allowed Carey to score on the play.

In the bottom of the fourth, Spatz hit a one-out double before scoring on a Haile single.

In the fifth, Curry led off with a single. With two outs, Damm doubled, and an error allowed Curry to cut the lead to 3-2. Nixon followed with an RBI single to knot the game at 3.

Andrew Freeburger (Baltimore, MD/Parkville) – making his first appearance this season – joined Campo as the only other Gettysburg player with multiple hits, both going 2-for-4.

Gallione pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Bullets, striking out five to pick up the loss.

In a pitching by committee day for the Crusaders, the third man out of the bullpen, Matt Dwyer, picked up his second win of the season. In two innings of work, he recorded one of Susquehanna's three strikeouts.

Despite picking up a 14-10 win on Tuesday, Gettysburg has stranded 25 baserunners in the last two outings to push its season total to 253.

The Bullets return to action on Friday at home against Villa Julie. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
