Gettysburg out-duels Villa Julie for win in the bottom of the ninth

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa.Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) picked a great time for his only hit of the game, leading Gettysburg to a 3-2 victory over visiting Villa Julie in non-conference baseball action on Friday.

With two out in the bottom of the ninth, Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) dropped a ball into short right field that rolled to fence for a triple. With a 1-1 count, Pernice avenged an 0-for-4 day, lacing a ball into left for the game-winning RBI.

Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) won the pitchers' duel for the Bullets (14-18-1), going the full nine and recording eight strikeouts to even his record at 2-2.

Justin McKeever worked the full game for the Mustangs (8-24), giving up nine hits and striking out three.

After retiring the first four Villa Julie batters of the game on two strikeout and two flyouts, Spicer surrendered his first hit of the game to Brandon Clark, a bloop-single to right. Clark stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring on Chadd Lettau's groundout for the 1-0 lead.

Gettysburg answered in the bottom of the inning when Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School) was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.

Back-to-back singles to right by Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) brought Bonyai around to knot the game at 1-all.

McKeever got a strikeout and pair of groundouts to leave the two standing at second and third.

The Bullets took the 2-1 advantage in the home third. With two down, Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) drew a walk before scoring on a Bonyai double to left-center.

The Mustangs fought back in the fifth to tie the game at 2. After Jason Bungori reached on a fielder's choice, Mike Lynch singled to right to put runners on the corners with one away.

Nick Deaner followed with a sacrifice bunt up the first baseline to score Bungori and knot the game once again.

Gettysburg only had four runners reach while Villa Julie only had two hit safely until the back-to-back hits in the ninth to win the game.

Bonyai and Ball had two hits and an RBI to their credit for the Bullets on the afternoon.

Kevin Rodgers had the only two-hit performance for the Mustangs.

Gettysburg return to action on Saturday at Washington for a doubleheader. Game time is 1 p.m.
