Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin,
NY/Baldwin) tallied the 200th point of his collegiate
career and Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown)
collected a career-high nine points as Gettysburg unleashed
its highest scoring output in two years to defeat Haverford
19-6 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on
Saturday.
Van Nostrand matched his career high
of seven points with three goals and four assists, vaulting
from seventh into a fourth-place tie on the program’s all-time
points list. The senior became the fifth Bullet to reach the
200-point mark.
Stewart staked Gettysburg (9-3, 5-1 CC)
to a 4-2 first-quarter lead with three of his five goals,
then had a hand in five goals during a 13-2 Bullet run across
the second and third quarters that left no doubt. The sophomore’s
final finish of the day, with 2:26 left in the third quarter,
came off the assist that stood as Van Nostrand’s 200th point.
Fellow attackman Evan Gallant (Lutherville,
MD/Cockeysville) also got into the act with a hat
trick and two assists, giving him nine points in his past
two games. Seniors Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New
Canaan) and John O’Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland
School) added two goals apiece in their final regular-season
home game.
Ben Reed and Max
Tcheyan each scored twice for Haverford (7-5, 2-5
CC) while midfielder Eric Seideman, who entered
the week as the CC’s leading goal scorer, was held to one
assist. Mike Fischette chipped in with a goal
and an assist.
With the Stewart, Van Nostrand and Gallant
leading the way, the Bullets used their best offensive day
since 2002 to move a step closer to the CC playoffs.
Reed’s first goal gave the Fords their
only lead of the game at 2-1 with 5:49 left in the first quarter
before Gettysburg got rolling.
Stewart scored off a Gallant feed moments
later to knot the game at 2, then put the Bullets ahead to
stay off a Twombly assist with 2:26 left in the quarter. Stewart
fed a cutting Gallant at the 1:21 mark to make it 4-2 after
one quarter.
Reed pulled Haverford within 4-3 to open
the second period, but Van Nostrand started his run to 200
by setting up Twombly at 10:45 to restore Gettysburg’s two-goal
lead. After Bullet midfielder Kevin Smith (Baltimore,
MD/McDonogh) and Fischette traded goals for a 6-4
margin, the home squad erupted.
Twombly lasered a shot under the cross
bar with 2:31 left in the half and O’Bannon tucked a shot
into the upper right corner at 1:20 to make it 8-4. Following
another of Campbell Henry’s (Chapel Hill, NC/Episcopal
[VA]) career-high 17 face-off wins, O’Bannon set up
Sean McTernan (Cordlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson)
on Gettysburg’s next possession.
Van Nostrand netted the Bullets’ 10th goal
of the day with 9.3 seconds left, a play Gallant made possible
by diving to stop the ball from going across the end line
seconds earlier.
The Gettysburg barrage continued after halftime.
Van Nostrand collected his third, fourth and fifth points
in a span of 3 minutes, 9 seconds to extend the lead to 14-4.
He then set up Stewart twice in the final 3:30 of the third
quarter to reach the 200-point mark.
Twombly and O’Bannon finished with three points
apiece while Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola)
made four saves before giving way to senior James Desson
(Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) early in the fourth quarter.
Henry finished 17-for-20 on the face-off “X”.
The Bullets improved to 20-0 all-time against
the Fords while scoring 19 goals in a game for the first time
since a 20-5 win over Western Maryland on Apr. 10, 2002.
John Michals and K.C. Peterson
each recorded six saves while splitting time in the Haverford
net.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at
Dickinson. Game time is 4 p.m. The Bullets would lock up a
CC playoff berth with a win over the Red Devils.
