Gettysburg closes perfect CC regular season with 18-4 win at Muhlenberg; Blankenship approaching points record

Box Score

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) tallied six of her game-high seven points in fifth-ranked Gettysburg’s 10-goal first half, helping the Bullets close out their Centennial Conference (CC) schedule with an 18-4 women’s lacrosse victory over Muhlenberg on Saturday.

Blankenship netted four goals and dished out three assists, moving within one point of the program’s all-time career points record. She finished the day with 283 career points, one behind former teammate Megan Murphy (284 from 2000-03). Blankenship will have a shot to break the record at home when Gettysburg (14-2, 9-0 CC) closes out the regular season on Monday against Susquehanna.

Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) and Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) each scored twice and handed out one assist for the Bullets, who had already clinched the top seed and hosting rights for next weekend’s CC playoffs. Gettysburg improved to 43-2 in conference play since the start of the 2000 season.

Diana Bleakley made 12 saves while four different players scored for the Mules (4-9, 2-7 CC), who were held to two goals after tying the game at 2 with 7:39 gone in the first half.

In addition to Blankenship’s barrage of points, the Bullets used four free-position goals in the first half to build an insurmountable lead.

Shihadeh converted a free-position attempt at 11:32 to snap the 2-all deadlock and Dougherty followed from the 8-meter arc at 18:30 to make it 4-2. Dougherty struck again 49 seconds later before Muhlenberg’s Liz Alexander cut the lead to 5-3 with an unassisted marker at 19:48.

From there, the Gettysburg defense took over, holding the Mules to one goal on six shots over the final 40 minutes and paving the way for a 9-0 Bullet run.

Blankenship set up Shihadeh at 21:30 to start the burst and Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) followed with two goals in a span of 35 seconds to make it 8-3. Blankenship added the final two goals of the half, scoring unassisted at 26:26 and on a free-position goal with 24 ticks left.

Alexandra Ewing (Monkton, MD/Garrison Forest) and Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) each scored twice in the opening 2 minutes, 30 seconds of the second half, pushing the lead to 14-3.

Muhlenberg’s Shannon Donohue snapped a nearly 26-minute scoring drought with an unassisted goal at 45:40.

Laura Fronduti’s (Media, PA/Penncrest) first collegiate goal started a 4-0 Gettysburg run in the game’s final nine minutes.
Blankenship has a team-leading 86 points this season, including 53 assists, the second-highest single-season total in program history. She handed out a record 62 assists last season.

Kate Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) keyed the defensive effort with a team-high five caused turnovers and four ground balls. Ewing became the eighth Bullet to reach double figures in goals this season, finishing the day with 10.

Gettysburg wraps up its regular season on Monday at home against Susquehanna. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
