GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) pitched a complete game in the opener and came back to work the first four innings of game two to lead Gettysburg to a Centennial Conference (CC) sweep of visiting Washington in softball action on Saturday.
The Bullets (22-9, 12-4 CC) broke a 1-all tie in the fifth inning of game one for a 2-1 victory and clinched a spot in next weekend's CC playoffs. In the nightcap, Gettysburg scored in each of the first three innings en route to a 4-1 win.
Diane Green worked in both games for the Shorewomen (8-21-1, 3-13 CC), going the full distance in the opener for the loss and pitching the final inning of game two.
In game one, Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) completed a 2-for-2 showing with a double to center to lead off the fifth inning. Emily Payne (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) followed with one of seven Bullet sacrifice bunts in the two games to advance Hallahan to third.
After a groundout, Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) sent a ball up the middle to score Hallahan for the 2-1 lead.
Kiry worked out of trouble in the visitor sixth, and got a great defensive play from centerfielder Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) to protect the one-run advantage and secure the victory.
After sacrificing in her first two trips to plate, Tara Harrigan opened the frame for Washington with a double to the fence in left-center. After Kiry's third strikeout of the game, Theresa Pyzik ripped a line-drive back to the pitcher for her only basehit of the contest to put runners at first and third with one out.
Laura Mozzer sent a fly ball to shallow center. Gale made the catch and came up throwing, nailing Harrigan at the plate for the third out of the inning.
The Bullets grabbed the 1-0 lead after Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) led off the bottom of the second with a single up the middle.
Two batters later and after Pilarcik advanced to second on a wild pitch, Hallahan singled to center, allowing Pilarcik to come around and score.
In the next half-inning, Beth Anne Hartman led off with a single just inside the chalk on the third-base side. After stealing second, Laura Scimeca drew a walk. Harrigan followed with her second sacrifice bunt of the day to move both runners up a bag.
Green flied out to left to bring Hartman in, and knot the game at 1-all.
In the nightcap, the Shorewomen took an early 1-0 advantage, but the Bullets plated single runs in the first, second, third and fifth to complete the sweep.
Scimeca singled up the middle to open the contest before coming around to score on a Mozzer double the gap in right-center. Kiry worked out of trouble, inducing an inning-ending infield pop fly to leave the bases loaded.
Gettysburg quickly knotted the game at 1-all in the bottom of the inning.
With two down, Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]) singled to right field and Gale followed with an RBI triple.
In the second, the Bullets took the lead for good. After Pilarcik led off with a double to right and Hallahan reached on a throwing error that allowed Pilarcik to come home from second.
In the third, Eiden reached on a bunt single before coming around to score on a Sara Gutermuth (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) single up the middle for the 3-1 advantage.
Eiden scored for the third time in the second game on a Gutermuth RBI single to left.
In the nightcap, Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) notched the first save for a Gettysburg pitcher in 2003, working the final three innings and allowing one hit while striking out one.
Pilarcik's game two matched Hallahan's game one, with both going a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored. Eiden was 2-for-3 in the nightcap and scored three of the four Bullet tallies. Guthermuth also added a 2-for-3 day with a pair of RBIs in game two.
The Bullets return to action on Monday at home for a doubleheader against Messiah. Game one begins 3:30 p.m.
