CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown) went a combined 6-for-10 with four runs scored and four RBIs to lift Gettysburg to a sweep in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday at Washington.

The Bullets (16-18-1, 7-11 CC) plated five runs in the top of the 11th inning to win the opener 8-3 before scoring early in game two and holding on for a 7-5 victory.

Mike DeBartolome recorded a pair of hits in both games for the Shoremen (9-23, 3-15 CC), and pitched four innings in the opener for the loss.

With the game tied at 3, Ben Carey (Colchester, CT/St. Bernard) was hit by a pitch to lead off the 11th. After Carey stole second, Chase Straub (Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) drew a walk to put runners at first and second.

Brian Pernice (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown) got his only hit of the game to load the bases, and Smith followed with a two-RBI single to give the Bullets a 5-3 edge.

Ron Lettieri (South Hempstead, NY/Hills East) followed with a single of his own to load the bases once again for Joe Bonyai (Torrington, CT/Hotchkiss School). Bonyai singled home Pernice and Lettieri before Washington got a double play and strikeout to end the threat.

Lettieri – seeing his first action on the hill this spring – went back to work in the bottom of the frame with a four-run cushion. After getting a strikeout to start the inning, Jim Barossi reached on an error before Walt Pyzik flied out to center.

Zachary Huba singled and Marco Muscella walked to load the bases, but Lettieri got a pop out to Bonyai at first base to leave all three standing and pick up the victory.

Gettysburg grabbed an early 1-0 lead when Smith, who singled with one away in the first, came around to score on a Bonyai single.

The Shoremen in the bottom of the second when Barossi hit a solo home run to knot the score at 1-all. Barossi ended game one 3-for-5, and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

Bonyai answered with a homer of his own in the top of the sixth. With Lettieri aboard via a walk, Bonyai went yard for his first home run of the season.

Washington countered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame, but neither squad could get much offense going from there on out until the Bullets exploded for the five runs in the 11th.

In the nightcap, Gettysburg plated three runs in each the third and fourth innings to grab a 6-1 lead before the Shoremen scored four times in the fifth to cut the lead to one.

In the visitor third, Pernice opened the frame with his second of three singles. Smith followed with a single of his own. After a groundout moved both runners up a base and a passed ball allowed Pernice to score and Smith to move to third, McDonald singled home Smith for the 2-0 lead and then scored on a Straub single.

Jay McEvoy drew a one-out walk and came in to score on an RBI groundout by DeBartolome in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 3-1.

In the fourth, Freeburger and Mark Campo (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) led off with back-to-back singles.

After a double steal put the runners at second and third with one out, Smith laced a bases-clearing double for the 5-1 lead.

Bonyai singled home Smith to stretch the lead to 6-1 before Washington started its comeback.

Clint Connelly led off the home fifth with a walk and Muscella singled before McEvoy doubled home Connolly.

After facing three batters in the inning, Gettysburg starter Rob Borman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) turned the ball over to Chris Threadgill (Pottstown, PA/The Hill School).

After Muscella scored on a wild pitch and Huba reached on an error to score McEvoy, Threadgill settled in for a strikeout and pop out. Pinch-runner Steve Smith stole home to cut the lead to 6-5 before Threadgill struck out his second batter of the frame.

The Bullets added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Pernice scored on a Bonyai sacrifice fly, and the Gettysburg defense held strong in the two innings for the victory.

Bonyai was 4-for-5 in the opener with five RBIs joining Pernice as the only Bullets to accomplish those feats this season.

In the nightcap, Borman recorded his second win, and Ross Hempel (Marriotsville, MD/Glenelg) worked the final 1 2/3 innings for his second save.

Gettysburg return to action on Tuesday at Elizabethtown. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
