Bullets clinch CC playoff berth with 10-3 win at Dickinson; Janczyk wins 200th at Gettysburg

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) and Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola) each scored a game-high three goals, helping fifth-ranked Gettysburg clinch a Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse playoff berth with a 10-3 victory at Dickinson on Wednesday.

Stewart and Gallant struck for four of their six goals in the decisive first half as the Bullets (10-3, 6-1 CC) opened up a 7-0 lead and cruised to head coach Hank Janczyk’s 200th victory at Gettysburg. The Bullets also extended their winning streak against the Red Devils (8-5, 4-3 CC) to 29 games.

Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola) made 10 saves and Matt Stanley (Fallston, MD/Calvert Hall) forced five of Dickinson’s 33 turnovers to key Gettysburg’s defensive effort. For the fifth time in eight CC games this season, the Bullet “D” held its opposition to fewer than five goals.

Brian Read scored a goal and added one assist for the Red Devils while goalie Tom Wilson finished with 11 saves on 41 shots.

On top of their defensive game from the opening face-off, Gettysburg kicked in the offense with a scoring burst in each of the first two quarters.

Following nine scoreless minutes, Matt Twombly (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) started the visitors’ game-opening 7-0 run with two goals in a span of 27 seconds. The senior midfielder drifted right of the cage before ripping a shot past Wilson at the 6:00 mark, then repeated the feat from the left side to give the Bullets a 2-0 lead.

Vaughan maintained the two-goal advantage with a kick save on Ed Boyd and Gallant made it 3-0 seconds later off a feed from Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) with 1:49 left in the quarter.

Stewart, Gettysburg’s goal-scoring leader, finished a curling run to the left of Wilson to open the second-quarter scoring, then tucked a drive inside the right pipe to make it 5-0. Gallant’s extra-man one-timer pushed the lead to 6-0 and John O’Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland School) unleashed an unassisted goal to cap the run with 6:20 left in the half.

In addition to five first-half saves by Vaughan, the Bullet defense was on display in the persons of Stanley and fellow close defenseman Ben Roberts (Longmeadow, MA/Westminster), who caused seven of Dickinson’s 18 first-half turnovers.

The Red Devils showed signs of life late in the first half.

Read put Dickinson on the board at the 5:19 mark, then set up Flynn Burch with four seconds remaining in the half to cut the deficit to 7-2. Taylor Hare one-timed a pass from Boyd past Vaughan from close range to make it 7-3 midway through the third quarter, but the Red Devils wouldn’t score again.

Stewart answered Hare’s goal 66 seconds later to re-start the Gettysburg attack and Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, MD/Bullis) scored on a long-range bounce shot to push the lead to 9-3. Gallant netted the only goal of the fourth quarter, scooping up the rebound of Wilson’s save on Jay Mayes (Pikesville, MD/McDonogh) and putting it home with 14:25 left.

Van Nostrand finished with three assists on the day, breaking a tie for fourth-place on the program’s all-time career points list (203). The senior reached the 200-mark with a seven-point outing on Saturday.

Eight of Gallant’s 13 goals this season have come in the last three games.

Janczyk, a two-time Division III Coach of the Year selection, improved to 245-91 in 22 years of coaching, including a 200-57 mark in 17 seasons with the Bullets.

Gettysburg returns to the CC playoffs for the fourth straight season in search of the program’s eighth CC championship. The conference semifinals will be held on Friday, May 7 at Washington (Md.) with opponent and time to be determined.

The Bullets wrap up their regular season on Saturday at Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 1 p.m.
