Gettysburg spreads the wealth in 18-12 win at Washington

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) tied a career high with seven of fifth-ranked Gettysburg’s season-best 14 assists, helping four Bullets post hat tricks in an 18-12 Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse victory over Washington (Md.) on Saturday.

Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) cashed in Blankenship assists on three of her team-high four goals as the Gettysburg (9-1, 4-0 CC) won its 21st consecutive CC game. Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) netted her first collegiate hat trick while Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park County School) and Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) also struck for three goals apiece.

Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) made a career-high 13 saves for the Bullets, who have posted consecutive victories over the three other teams in last year’s CC playoffs. The two-time defending champions downed Ursinus last Saturday and Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday.

Blankenship also scored a goal to finish with a season high-tying eight points. The senior captain edged within 11 points of third place on the program’s all-time points list, finishing the day with 245 career points.

Casey Sawma scored a team-high four goals for the Shorewomen (5-4, 2-2 CC), who rallied to within 11-9 late in the second half before allowing six straight Gettysburg goals. Emmy Hyde chipped in with a hat trick while Lindsey Eichner added two goals and two assists.

The win followed a similar storyline to that of the Bullets’ victory over F&M on Wednesday. As with the Diplomats, Gettysburg took a five-goal lead into halftime and watched its opponent rally before sealing the win with an offensive burst.

The plot, however, diverged greatly from the rest of the season in the area of assists. Averaging 4.2 assists per game in their first nine contests, the Bullets handed out 14 helpers on Saturday.

Zappacosta needed no help putting Gettysburg on the scoreboard, converting a free-position attempt with one minute elapsed. Blankenship set up Lowe at 3:01 to make it 2-0 and the Bullets got goals from Delauney, Blankenship and Farrell in a span of 65 seconds to push the lead to 5-1.

Delauney gave the visitors a 7-2 advantage with her second goal of the game at 15:18, but Sawma, Janet Studdiford and Hyde connected in a span of fewer than four minutes to cut the deficit to 8-5.

Blankenship set up Lowe and Zappacosta in the final 1:33 of the half, putting Gettysburg ahead 10-5 at intermission.

The opening minutes of the second half were all Washington. Hyde scored twice in the first three minutes of the period and Minta Sayres netted an unassisted marker at 36:50 to pull her team within 10-8. The Shorewomen remained within two at 11-9 when Eichner set up Sawma at 39:20.

Six Bullet goals over the next nine minutes ended Washington’s comeback.

Alexandra Ewing (Monkton, MD/Garrison Forest) opened the burst off a Blankenship assist. Delauney set up Farrell, then scored off a Kate Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) set-up to make it 14-9. Ewing scored again 24 seconds later, Lowe added her fourth goal of the day at 46:09 and Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) closed the run at 47:36.

Delauney added two assists to finish with five points in the win, Gettysburg’s sixth straight against the Shorewomen.

Studdiford scored twice and added one assist for Washington while goalie Mollie Binotto made nine saves.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at Dickinson. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
