Twelve Bullets score in 16-5 win at Dickinson; Blankenship leads the way with seven points

Box Score

CARLISLE, Pa. – Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) scored twice and handed out five assists to lead fifth-ranked Gettysburg over Dickinson 16-5 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Tuesday.

Blankenship had a hand in seven of her team’s first 10 goals as the Bullets (10-1, 4-0 CC) turned a 7-4 halftime lead into an 11-goal victory, their 22nd win in a row against CC opposition. The senior finished the day with 252 career points, four shy of third place on the program’s all-time list.

With two goals each, Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place), Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and current CC Player of the Week Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School) were among the 12 Gettysburg players to find the net on the afternoon.

Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) made nine saves for the Bullets, who held the Red Devils (4-4, 1-2 CC) to only one goal and nine shots after halftime.

Katie Austin scored twice for Dickinson while freshman goalie Gabby Joffie made 13 saves on 37 Gettysburg shots.

Although unable to shake the Red Devils until the second half, the Bullets never trailed after Blankenship scored her second goal of the day at 15:28 to make it 3-2. Zappacosta, coming off her first collegiate hat trick on Saturday, drilled her ninth goal of the season at 19:09, then set up Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) 15 seconds later for a 5-2 lead.

Austin converted a free-position goal at 22:07 to pull Dickinson within 5-3, but the hosts would get no closer. Blankenship set up Delauney at 25:40 and Kelly 53 seconds after that, pushing the lead to 7-3.

Austin gave the Red Devils life by finishing a tough solo run with 39 ticks left in the half, but the second 30 minutes belonged to Gettysburg.

Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O’Hara), Delauney and Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) struck for goals before the second half was five minutes old, stretching the lead to 10-4. Blankenship assisted on two of the scores, her 11th and 12th assists in the past two games.

Kelly made it 11-4 with her second goal of the day at 39:48 and Alexandra Ewing (Monkton, MD/Garrison Forest) followed at 45:26 off a feed from Jacquie O’Connor (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood).

Lesley Oot snapped Dickinson’s nearly 18 minute scoring drought off an assist from Kate Weissman at 47:08, but Borucki recorded her final three saves to keep the Red Devils off the board the rest of the way.

The Bullets closed out the scoring with four goals in the final 10 minutes.

Zappacosta and Shihadeh finished with a goal and two assists apiece. Freshman defender Laurie Goon (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven) picked up a team-best five ground balls while Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) led the way with five draw controls.

After recording 38 assists in its first nine games, Gettysburg has 26 in its last two contests. Blankenship pushed her team-leading assist total to 36.

Elle Beckert and Jena Boccetti also scored for Dickinson.

The Bullets return to action on Friday at home against Bryn Mawr. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
