Gettysburg rolls past Bryn Mawr, 20-1; Blankenship moves into third on Bullets’ all-time scoring list

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) scored seven points to move into third place on Gettysburg’s all-time scoring list as the fifth-ranked Bullets rolled past Bryn Mawr 20-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Friday.

Blankenship, who scored twice and handed out five assists, finished the day with 259 career points, moving past former teammate Becky Bucha (256 from 1999-2002). Only Colleen Dunn (272) and Megan Murphy (284) have collected more points in a Gettysburg uniform. Blankenship charged into the top three with 22 points in her last three games.

Alexandra Ewing (Monkton, MD/Garrison Forest) posted her first collegiate hat trick and Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) also scored three goals for the Bullets (11-1, 6-0 CC), who raced to a 14-0 halftime lead en route to their 23rd consecutive CC victory. Katie Hagan (Media, PA/Cardinal O’Hara) added her first three-point outing with a goal and two assists.

Ruth Zohrer scored for the Owls (7-3, 0-3 CC), who fell to 0-11 all-time against Gettysburg. Goalie Sarah Caldwell recorded 16 saves while facing 54 shots.

In possession for nearly the entire first half, the Bullets dominated on offense and defense.

Blankenship assisted on three of Gettysburg’s first four goals and scored the other, staking her squad to a 4-0 lead barely four minutes into the game. She moved past Bucha with her fourth assist of the day, a set-up on Ewing’s first goal at 12:51 that made it 9-0.

Blankenship finished a solo run to give Gettysburg a 10-goal lead, then closed her scoring day with an assist on Farrell’s second goal at 20:20. Katie Oates (Port Washington, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) and Jen Betts (Potomac, MD/Acad. of the Holy Cross) converted free-position goals in the final six minutes of the half to give the Bullets a 14-0 lead at the break.

Defensively, Gettysburg hounded Bryn Mawr into 12 broken clears and 19 turnovers while allowing the Owls only three offensive possessions in the first half. The Bullets yielded only one first-half shot while causing a Bryn Mawr turnover to halt each trip.

Zohrer finished a solo run to put the Owls on the board at the 33:38 mark. Bryn Mawr’s goal total was the lowest by a Gettysburg opponent since the Bullets defeated Regis College 20-0 in 2000.

Ewing completed her hat trick with a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes. Kelley Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) tallied her first goal of the 2004 campaign.

Gettysburg goalie Heather Kelley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) made one save in her first collegiate start before giving way to freshman Susan Meyers (Ridgewood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Acad.), who made her first collegiate appearance.

In addition to Blankenship, Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and Jenn Kelly (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) also scored twice in the win while Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School) netted her team-leading 30th goal of the season.

The Bullets return to action tomorrow at second-ranked College of New Jersey. Game time is 2 p.m.
