Gettysburg eliminated from CC playoffs; Bullets fall to McDaniel and Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.Amanda Wilson threw a four-hit shutout to lead Ursinus past Gettysburg 4-0 in the elimination game of the Centennial Conference (CC) championships on Saturday.

The Bears, entering the tournament at the No. 1 seed, fell to Muhlenberg in the first semifinal game 4-1 before eliminating the Bullets (22-13) to keep their hopes alive in the 2004 tournament. McDaniel defeated Gettysburg 9-1 in the first game of the day.

Wilson, the reigning Pitcher of the Year, threw the complete game and struck out six in seven innings while Gina Salvi went 2-for-3 with one RBI to help Ursinus (30-8-1) survive day one of the championship weekend.

Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation [DC]) tallied two hits on the afternoon, recording one in each game for Gettysburg.

Kelly DeBow scored the first run for the Bears on Salvi's double to center field. With one out and two runners on, Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) started the double play by throwing to first and Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) caught the runner at home for the third out.

Despite the defensive efforts, Ursinus chalked up another in the top of the fourth inning. Mary Reid scored after Eileen Caldwell sent one into left field for an RBI double.

The Bullets hit two singles and Sara Gutermuth (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) walked to load the bases, but Gettysburg could not get around to the plate before the third out.

The Bears put one more up in the sixth and held the Bullets off the board to complete the shutout.

After getting eliminated in the CC semifinals last year, the Green Terror (25-9) put eight runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, cruising to a 9-1 win and into tomorrow's championship game.

Heather Sinclair went 2-for-3 with a solo home run while Samantha Abrams worked five innings and gave up only three hits for the win.

Gutermuth and Megan Gorsuch (Mount Airy, MD/South Carroll) each tallied a hit in game one.

McDaniel recorded eight hits, including three doubles, to take a commanding 8-0 lead after one inning and finish the game in five for a 9-1 victory.

With bases loaded and one out, Burns ripped a two RBI double to centerfield to bring home Lauren Cramer and Mary Abrams. Burns then The Green  Terror collected their second out, before knocking in six straight hits and five more runs to end the inning with an eight-run lead.

The Bullets scored their lone run in the second inning. Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Pilarcik. Gale then scored on the second out, thanks to Margaret Hallahan's (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) drive to first base.

Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) started both games and recorded both of the losses.

Gettysburg ends the season with a 22-13 overall record.
